Research Associate, Instrument Development -- CIRES/NOAA ESRL



The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) has an opening for a Research Associate, located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth System Research Laboratory Chemical Science Division (NOAA/ESRL/CSD), Boulder, Colorado. The selected candidate will work in close cooperation with the research staff of CIRES and ESRL/CSD in developing a water vapor instrument and measuring and analyzing water vapor in the troposphere and lower stratosphere.


Duties


* Participate in the design, construction, and integration of a high altitude aircraft instrument to measure water vapor.
* Operate, maintain and calibrate the water vapor instrument.
* Participate in field missions to make atmospheric measurements.
* Interpret water vapor data to address the role of water vapor in upper atmospheric processes and climate change. This includes organization of multi-parameter data sets, interaction with other instrument investigators, and the use of satellite measurements and models.
* Prepare publications and participate in scientific meetings.


Qualifications


* PhD in physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, or a related field.
* Experience with the design, building, operation, and maintenance of complex instrumentation in a laboratory or field environment.
* Experience with optics, cryogenics and optical detectors is highly desirable.
* Experience with computer hardware and software for data acquisition and manipulation.
* Interest in building and using custom instrumentation to make measurements in the atmosphere and using these observations to address atmospheric problems of contemporary interest. A background in atmospheric science is not required.
* Experience with satellite data analysis desirable, but not required.
* Experience with radiative transfer modeling also desirable, but not required.

The successful candidate will become be appointed as a Research Associate (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and will be eligible for employee benefits, including 22 days of vacation per year.
