Field Meteorologist -- The North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board (NDARB)


 

Field Meteorologist: The North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board (NDARB), a division of the State Water Commission, is seeking to hire three Field Meteorologists for temporary seasonal employment beginning late May 2008, and terminating at the end of August 2008. Successful applicants will direct cloud seeding operations from radar field offices, located in Bowman and Stanley, North Dakota. Salary will begin at $2,750/month.


Minimum Qualifications: The position requires a B.S. in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science.


Additional factors: Experience with radar operation and short-term forecasting of deep convection; recent experience in operational convective cloud seeding.


Essential Job Functions: Operate/interpret 5-cm digital weather radar equipped with the Thunderstorm, Identification, Tracking, Analysis, and Nowcasting (TITAN) software package and simultaneously direct multiple aircraft. Identification of suitable clouds; clear communication with aircraft via two-way radio; operation of Windows, DOS, Linux/Unix-based software; pilot briefings; meteorological record keeping; public relations/information dissemination; direction and supervision of intern meteorologist; and supervision of chemical inventory. A one-week paid vacation will be given to each field meteorologist over the course of the project season.


Additional duties: Monitoring local weather conditions, interaction with National Weather Service personnel and the public, and data entry.


The NDARB will conduct a pre-project ground school and orientation in Bismarck on 21-23 May 2008; all project personnel are required to attend. The field phase of the project begins at noon on 1 June 2008, and continues as weather dictates, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the project’s conclusion on 31 August 2008. Accommodation will be made for those needing to leave the project early in order to return to school.
