We, in the Meteorology group at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University announce an appointment as assistant lecturer in Boundary Layer Meteorology. This is a kind of tenure track position. The closing date is prolonged to 1 August 2005. The Department: The Department of Earth Sciences consists of five programmes with some 200 employees. The main part of the department is located at the Earth Sciences Centre (Geocentrum). Meteorology belongs to the programme for Air and Water Sciences, which is responsible for education and research in hydrology, meteorology and environmental assessment. We are around 40 employees, half of which are teachers/scientists and half PhD students. Our research is directed towards climate studies with special emphases on understanding and parameterization of physical processes at the atmosphere/biosphere/ocean interface. Present research area: Our marine boundary layer research is focused around the air-sea interaction site Östergarnsholm, which has been ranked as a world-class facility by an international evaluation group. The site, which is a joint effort between Uppsala University and The Finnish Marine Research Institute, has been in operation since May 1995 on a semi-continuous basis. Analysis of data from Östergarnsholm has led to a fundamentally new understanding of the marine atmospheric boundary ( MABL). The turbulence structure and fluxes are very much influenced by the state of the sea but also the large heat capacity of the ocean. This means that Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, often used in models, is not valid over the ocean, and further research is needed to form a basis behind a next generation theory, and there is a critical need that atmospheric and oceanic prediction models adopt better parameterisation of surface waves and fluxes based on new understanding. In order to prepare for the science challenge to revolutionize similarity theory for the next generation models we need to strengthened our group with a colleague with qualification in areas like boundary-layer meteorology, theoretical turbulence or wave dynamics.
