*Project Engineer: Imaging through Atmospheric Turbulence

The Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, UK.
Salary scale: £19,460 - £29,127 pa (under review)

A Project Engineer is required as soon as possible on a fixed term three year appointment to take a central role in a new research programme funded by the EPSRC. For some years we have been using a new technique for imaging through the turbulent atmosphere in astronomy called Lucky Imaging. This new program is aimed at using similar techniques for ground based surveillance. The technique involves taking high-speed images in order to freeze the turbulence in the atmosphere and then processing the images to select the sharpest. There is a lot of information about the technique in the astronomical context at: http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/~optics/Lucky_Web_Site/index.htm . The project engineer will take a central role in organising and running the project, working within the Lucky Imaging group which is part of the Instrumentation Group at the Institute of Astronomy in the University of Cambridge. The successful applicant will have practical experience of running experimental projects and preferably a working knowledge of atmospheric turbulence physics as well as experience of computer-based data reduction methods. The work involves contact with collaborators within the United Kingdom so there are will be opportunities for travel within the UK, and possibly overseas.

The salary is on the Research Associate scale of £19,460 - £29,127 pa (under review) dependent on skills and experience.
