Postdoctoral Position in Satellite Atmospheric Sciences: CO2 Retrieval from SCIAMACHY

The Institute of Enviromental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen located in northern Germany is seeking a suitable candidate for the (further)development of numerical algorithms for the retrieval of carbon dioxide (CO2)from the spectral radiance measurements of the SCIAMACHY instrument onboard the European environmental satellite ENVISAT.

SCIAMACHY is the first satellite instrument which can measure the atmospheric greenhouse gas CO2 globally with high sensitivity down to the Earth's surface. These measurements have the potential to significantly advance our understanding of CO2 sources and sinks. This application requires high accuracy and precision. The focus of this position will be to develop an accurate retrieval algorithm to be used for a reference system. The software shall be flexible enough to also be applied to similar measurements of near-future sensors.

The position will be - assuming final approval - for two years with an envisaged salary of BAT IIa (see, e.g., http://paul.schubbi.org/cgi-bin/bat-rechner/).

Requirements:
  • University degree (Diplom/Master) in physics, meteorology, mathematics, or equivalent
  • PhD (within the last five years)
  • Very good knowledge of physics (includig theoretical physics) and mathematics (including numerical methods)
  • Ideally very good knowledge of atmospheric physics, remote sensing, radiative transfer, spectroscopy, and inversion methods
  • Extensive programming experience with at least one higher level language (C, C++, Fortran) and good knowledge of Linux/UNIX
  • Very good knowledge of English and preferably also of the German language

The work will be performed in cooperation with national and international research institutes. General information about our institute can be found at http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de

Specific information about the research task is given at http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de/sciamachy/NIR_NADIR_WFM_DOAS/.

Women are explicitely invited to apply. Handicapped will be preferred in case of equal qualification.
