On May 24, 1954, the name was changed by Congress to "Veteran's Day" to

Ph.D. Oral Comprehensive Exam: Eunha Kang will present her Oral Comprehensive Exam on Wednesday November 16, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. in 529 Walker Building. The title of her talk is "PAM (Potential Aerosol Mass) Measurement."

M.S. Defense: Jeff Gall will defend his M.S. thesis on Friday, November 18 at 9:00 a.m. in 529 Walker Building. The title of his talk is "The Effects of Sea Spray on Tropical Cyclone Intensity."

Dennis Lamb will be on sabbatical for Spring 2006.

2006 ASP/NCAR Postdoctoral Fellowships: The postdoctoral program provides an opportunity for recent-Ph.D. scientists to continue to pursue their research interests in atmospheric and related science. Tickets for EMS Casino Night will be on sale Nov. 7-22. Casino Night will be held on Friday, Dec. 2 from 6:30 - 11 p.m. Tickets are $20 for students and $25 for faculty/staff. Come out and gamble!

The EMS Student Council will host a "Poker Night" on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in 109 Walker. Admission is $5 and includes snacks.

Buy an EMS Dining Card and support the EMS United Way campaign. Cards cost $10 each and are good for freebies and/or discounts at a variety of restaurants and vendors around town.

The EMS United Way team will be hosting their usual Pizza Sale on Wednesday, November 9 in Walker and Deike Building. $3 will get you two slices of pizza and a drink.

An EMS Thon Pizza Sale will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The deal is $3.00 for two slices of pizza and a can of soda. The EMS Thon team would like to make this a regular Wednesday event on the days when there is not a EMS United Way pizza sale. So please look for flyers and check the weekly EMS Announcements to see when the THON Pizza Sales will occur. Whether the money goes to the United Way or to THON, you can be sure that your money is going to a good cause. NOAA 30th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop
Over 170 people, representing countries from all around the world, attended the 30th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop held at the Penn State Nittany Lion Inn from October 24-28. Despite an unusual snow event on Tuesday, October 25, President Spanier delivered welcoming remarks to attendants after the lunch break. The event was sponsored by NOAA, Penn State Department of Meteorology, and the American Meteorological Society. [View photos from the event.]

PSUBAMS Internship Meeting -- On Tuesday, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. in 160 Willard Building, PSUBAMS will be hosting its annual summer internship meeting. Many students who have had past internships in meteorology will be discussing what they did, how you can apply, and the benefits of holding an internship. In addition, faculty members in the Meteorology Department have been invited to discuss summer research opportunities they have for undergraduates. Please consider attending, as all students should have summer internships in their major field. Lastly, we will also be voting on photos to be placed into a 2006 weather calendar. Congratulations to Zack Lebo who has been accepted to Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic for studies abroad for the spring 2006 semester.

Udall Scholarships: In 2006, the Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships of up to $5000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior-level college students.
