Did You Know?

Turkeys have great hearing, but no external ears. They can also see in color, and have excellent visual
acuity and a wide field of vision (about 270 degrees), which makes sneaking up on them difficult.
However, turkeys have a poor sense of smell (what's cooking?), but an excellent sense of taste.

Meteo Tailgate: On Friday, Nov. 18, the Meteo main office will host a "Beat Michigan State" tailgate. Stop by for some tailgate snacks and get in the spirit!

Ph.D. Oral Comprehensive Exam: Eunha Kang will present her Oral Comprehensive Exam on Wednesday November 16, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. in 529 Walker Building. The title of her talk is "PAM (Potential Aerosol Mass) Measurement."

An ESSC Brown Bag Seminar will be held on Wednesday, November 16 at 11:45 a.m. in 529 Walker Building. The speaker will be Christopher Shuman of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and his talk is titled "Satellite Laser Altimetry Studies in Antarctica -- Early Results from NASA's ICESat Mission.

M.S. Defense: Jeff Gall will defend his M.S. thesis on Friday, November 18 at 9:00 a.m. in 529 Walker Building. The title of his talk is "The Effects of Sea Spray on Tropical Cyclone Intensity."

2006 ASP/NCAR Postdoctoral Fellowships: The postdoctoral program provides an opportunity for recent-Ph.D. scientists to continue to pursue their research interests in atmospheric and related science. Tickets for EMS Casino Night will be on sale Nov. 7-22. Casino Night will be held on Friday, Dec. 2 from 6:30 - 11 p.m. Tickets are $20 for students and $25 for faculty/staff. Come out and gamble!

Poker Night
The EMS Student Council is sponsoring Poker Night, which will be held on Friday, November 18th at 7pm in 109 Walker. Admission is $5 and snacks will be provided. Drinks will be sold for $0.50. We will be playing Texas Hold 'Em. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third places. Come on out an play a few hands with your fellow EMS students! Bring a friend, roommate or fellow poker lover! All profits will go to the EMS Student Council.

Buy an EMS Dining Card and support the EMS United Way campaign. Cards cost $10 each and are good for freebies and/or discounts at a variety of restaurants and vendors around town.

College of EMS T-shirt Sale
The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences is selling new college t-shirts! The back graphic was designed by a College of EMS student. T-shirts will be $10. Place your order in the Student Council office, which is located in the EMS Student Center, during Student Council Executive Board office hours (listed below) by Thursday, November 17th. An EMS Thon Pizza Sale will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The deal is $3.00 for two slices of pizza and a can of soda. The EMS Thon team would like to make this a regular Wednesday event on the days when there is not a EMS United Way pizza sale. So please look for flyers and check the weekly EMS Announcements to see when the THON Pizza Sales will occur. Whether the money goes to the United Way or to THON, you can be sure that your money is going to a good cause. NOAA 30th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop
Over 170 people, representing countries from all around the world, attended the 30th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop held at the Penn State Nittany Lion Inn from October 24-28. Despite an unusual snow event on Tuesday, October 25, President Spanier delivered welcoming remarks to attendants after the lunch break. The event was sponsored by NOAA, Penn State Department of Meteorology, and the American Meteorological Society. [View photos from the event.]

EMS Student Council Meeting
