The Chi Epsilon Pi Fall 2005 Initiation Ceremony will be held in Room 105 Walker at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6. Pizza, pop, chips, and cake will be provided for dinner. Following dinner will be an entertaining game. All current Chi Epsilon Pi members are invited to attend. A good time is guaranteed for all.

The Office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research will host POEMS on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at noon. Location TBA.

2006 ASP/NCAR Postdoctoral Fellowships: The postdoctoral program provides an opportunity for recent-Ph.D. scientists to continue to pursue their research interests in atmospheric and related science. NOAA 30th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop
Over 170 people, representing countries from all around the world, attended the 30th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop held at the Penn State Nittany Lion Inn from October 24-28. Despite an unusual snow event on Tuesday, October 25, President Spanier delivered welcoming remarks to attendants after the lunch break. The event was sponsored by NOAA, Penn State Department of Meteorology, and the American Meteorological Society. [View photos from the event.]

Ph.D. Candidacy Examinees: The candidacy exam will be held on Thursday and Friday, January 5 and 6, 2006. On January 5 the physical meteorology section will be given and on January 6 the dynamical meteorology section will be given; this is the reverse order that we have used in the past. Saturday, January 7 will be the snow day if either section can not be given on the assigned day. The exams will be held in 529 Walker and start as soon after 8:30 AM as everyone taking that section has arrived. The exam, which consists of answer 3 of 5 questions on each day, will start no later than 9 AM, and must be completed by 1 PM. If you have not yet signed up for the exam, please talk to Dr. Shirer ASAP.

A Graduation Reception for all graduating students, their families, and friends will be held in the Weather Station on December 17th following the graduation ceremony (approximately noon). If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Rhonda Spychalski (rfs14@psu.edu) by December 13 with the number of people attending.

The National Science Foundation and the Institute of International Education announce the opening of the Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI). CESRI will provide awards for U.S. Graduate students in the sciences and engineering with a high-quality international summer research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia. Competition for Summer 2006 is now open and full CESRI program information application materials can be found online at www.iie.org/cesri. The deadline is February 6, 2006.

EMS Student Council: The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Undergraduate Student Council will be having a meeting on Wednesday, December 7th in 301 Steidle at 5:45 pm. Pizza will arrive shortly before. We'll continue our planning for 2006 events (EMEX, THON) and much more.

Energy Business and Finance Majors and those interested! The EBF Society has now been officially recognized by the University. The officers would like to invite all interested EBF majors or GBS minors to the
Kick-Off meeting of the Energy Business and Finance Society. During the meeting the officers will explain all the features and programs that the organization will be offering. A book exchange, study boards, class evaluations, speaker series and scheduling advice will all be part of the programs that the EBF Society will be offering to its members.

The Undergraduate Exhibition will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park. This annual event is open to all Penn State undergraduate students, with entries judged in seven categories: Arts and Humanities (including Visual Arts), Engineering, Health and Life Sciences, Performance, Physical Sciences, Public Scholarship, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Udall Scholarships: In 2006, the Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships of up to $5000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior-level college students. Students must be nominated by their institution. Contact the Undergraduate Fellowships Office in 212 Boucke to apply for nomination.
