Karen Tinklepaugh will defend her M.S. thesis on Tuesday, December 20 at 10:00 a.m. in 529 Walker Building. The title of her talk is "Influence of Mesoscale Eddies on the Distribution of Dissolved Oxygen in the Sargasso Sea."

Fifty years after Charles Hosler and his group of graduate student researchers, Richard Hallgren, D. C. Jensen, and L. Goldshlak, studied the dynamics of ice surfaces, it has become an active research topic. Research studies conducted by Hosler's group are referenced on p. 52 in the December 2005 issue of Physics Today in an article titled "Why Is Ice Slippery?" [View Article]

Dennis Thomson has been recognized by Penn State Residence Life for developing personal connections with first year students and making a positive impact by serving as a mentor and support system for them. He was nominated for the Residence Life "Making the First Year Count" award by an upperclassman resident assistant who was asked to reflect on his or her freshman year and identify a faculty member who was instrumental to their success during their first year. He was presented with the award at a luncheon reception on December 8th.

2006 ASP/NCAR Postdoctoral Fellowships: The postdoctoral program provides an opportunity for recent-Ph.D. scientists to continue to pursue their research interests in atmospheric and related science. The Biosphere-Atmosphere Research and Training Program (BART) is accepting applications for Fellowships. Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and enrolled in any doctoral program in the U.S. are eligible to apply. Fellowships include an annual stipend of $30,000, up to $2000 for equipment and supplies, and support for travel to the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) and to a professional conference. For more information visit the BART web page at http://www.bart-umich.org. Applications are due in February 2006.

Ph.D. Candidacy Examinees: The candidacy exam will be held on Thursday and Friday, January 5 and 6, 2006. On January 5 the physical meteorology section will be given and on January 6 the dynamical meteorology section will be given; this is the reverse order that we have used in the past. Saturday, January 7 will be the snow day if either section can not be given on the assigned day. The exams will be held in 529 Walker and start as soon after 8:30 AM as everyone taking that section has arrived. The exam, which consists of answer 3 of 5 questions on each day, will start no later than 9 AM, and must be completed by 1 PM. If you have not yet signed up for the exam, please talk to Dr. Shirer ASAP.

The National Science Foundation and the Institute of International Education announce the opening of the Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI). CESRI will provide awards for U.S. Graduate students in the sciences and engineering with a high-quality international summer research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia. Competition for Summer 2006 is now open and full CESRI program information application materials can be found online at www.iie.org/cesri. The deadline is February 6, 2006.

Graduate Exhibition 2006! Next year's Graduate Poster Exhibition will be held at the HUB on Sunday March 26, 2006 and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. An online entry form and complete guidelines for participants can be found on the Graduate School homepage at http://www.gradsch.psu.edu/exhibition/. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and each college is guaranteed 10 poster spaces. Entry forms will be accepted beginning on January 2, 2006 and continuing until 5:00 p.m. on February 10, 2006. An informational meeting for potential exhibitors will be held on Wed., January 18 from 5-7 p.m. in 112 Kern.

College Teaching, HIED 546 (3 credits), Spring 2006. This course has been designed for graduate students and beginning college faculty who see teaching as a vital part of their professional practice. The main objective of the course is to explore issues related to teaching by conjoining theory and practice. The Undergraduate Exhibition will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park. This annual event is open to all Penn State undergraduate students, with entries judged in seven categories: Arts and Humanities (including Visual Arts), Engineering, Health and Life Sciences, Performance, Physical Sciences, Public Scholarship, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) welcomes applications from students interested in participating in their Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Biosphere-Atmosphere studies. Students will get "hands-on" experience and training in field biology, atmospheric chemistry, and atmosphere-ecosystem interactions. If so, then please consider joining Campus Weather Service Video Operations during the Spring 2006 semester. We will be having our organizational meeting on Monday, January 9 at 7:00 p.m. in 112 Walker Building. This meeting is for anyone
interested in participating next semester, regardless of previous experience. There are plenty of opportunities in CWS Video for everyone, both old and new members, so please come on out, help CWS, and bolster your communication skills. Udall Scholarships: In 2006, the Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships of up to $5000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior-level college students.
