Alumnus George Bryan ('96, '98, '03) has been selected as a recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award for 2006 in honor of his professional accomplishments. This University-wide award is a permanent title authorized by the Board of Trustees. George will return to Penn State on April 6 and 7 to share his experiences with students, faculty, and staff. [More Info] He will present a special Department seminar titled, "Roll circulations in the convective region of squall lines." on Friday, April 7 at 1:15 p.m. in 112 Walker Building. [Abstract]

A faculty workshop, "How to Apply for a Fulbright," will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. in the Nittany Lion Inn Alumni Lounge. Grants are appropriate for scholars at all stages, including experienced teachers/scholars (even those with modest publishing records), recent Ph.D.s, and retired faculty. The Meteorology Spring Banquet has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 18 at the Ramada Inn. Cocktails will begin at 6:30 pm with dinner at 7:00 pm. More details will be forthcoming.

The Meteorology Department will be phasing in a new required three-credit course, Principles of Atmospheric Measurement, Meteo 440W, beginning in the Fall '06 semester. Meteo 440W will replace the two 1-credit courses, Meteo 445 and Meteo 446, but the total number of credits to graduate (121) will not change. Meteorology Career Days is taking place this Wednesday and Thursday! If you've registered for interviews, view your online schedule from the Career Days website. Be sure to show up for all your interviews! This is very important to the success of Career Days so the recruiters return each year. Also, you did not have to register to just attend the Wednesday night presentations and reception at the Atherton. This event is open to all Meteorology students, including graduate students. All students are encouraged to attend. This is a great chance to see what job opportunities there are with a degree in Meteorology. On Tuesday, April 4, Keith Westerlage, Director of On-Camera Meteorology for The Weather Channel, will be speaking to PSUBAMS about on-camera meteorology and The Weather Channel. To learn more about Keith, visit http://www.weather.com/aboutus/television/ocms/westerlage.html. This presentation is a MUST for anyone interested in a career in broadcast meteorology. The talk will take the form of a 30 minute formal presentation, followed by a question and answer period. If you dream of working for The Weather Channel in an on-camera role, Keith is the person who views the tapes of all applicants. He will be able to provide keen insight as to what employers are looking for in their broadcasters. Please make every effort you can to attend. As added incentive, this event is going to occur following a PSUBAMS Ice Cream Social! Lockheed Martin Scholarships for Women. Ten $1,000 scholarships are available. Applications are due April 3, 2006. A summer REU at the University of Colorado-Boulder is available for undergraduates on topics related to Environmental Fluids: Science, Assessment, and Treatment. Potential research topics include drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment, stream ecology, acid mine drainage impacts, site remediation, air pollution, groundwater modeling, fluid mechanics, and hydroclimatology. GEOTIMES Internship: Geotimes, the monthly news magazine of the earth sciences, is now accepting applications for its 2006 summer internship. (Deadline for application is April 7.) Candidates interested in science writing and journalism with an earth sciences background are encouraged to apply. The 12- week long internship is based at the American Geological Institute in Alexandria, VA and includes a $3,500 stipend. Two meteorology undergraduate students, Joshua Walker and Amber Ortega, have been accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (also known as the McNair Scholars Program). This program is designed to prepare minority students in all disciplines for a Ph.D. program and was established in memory of Ronald E. McNair, the African-American astronaut who died in the Challenger space shuttle accident. This internationally-renowned program is available to students at nearly 200 universities and consists of GRE preparation, summer research, and a chance to network with thousands of other Ph.D.-bound students. The Undergraduate Exhibition will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park. This annual event is open to all Penn State undergraduate students, with entries judged in seven categories: Arts and Humanities (including Visual Arts), Engineering, Health and Life Sciences, Performance, Physical Sciences, Public Scholarship, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program: Applications for this scholarship (only in it's second year) are due in May. Relatively few students apply for these scholarships, so when Penn Stater's apply, they have a fairly good success. Up to $28,425 is available per student: Up to $8,000 of academic assistance per year for full-time study during the junior and senior years; a 10-week, paid ($650/week) internship during the intervening summer; housing subsidy during the internship; round-trip travel to the internship site; and travel expenses to the Hollings scholarship program conference. Last year, three Penn State Meteorology students were awarded this scholarship. Junior and senior students are eligible.
