Meteorology alumnus establishes EMS Trustee Matching Scholarship. James H. ('53, '55) and Joan E. Meyer have donated over $50,000 to establish a Trustee Scholarship to support undergraduate meteorology students with need, who are pursuing studies in physical meteorology. [More]

PSU alumnus ('78), expert meteorologist, and competitive bodybuilder, Joe Bastardi, recently won the Masters Division at the U.S.A. Bodybuilding Championships and placed third in his class in the Open Division. [Full Story]

Altoona Curve Game Outing: PSUBAMS officers are planning a department outing to an Altoona Curve game on Thursday, September 1 (7:05 p.m.) and Zack Byko (zmb102@psu.edu) is still trying to estimate the number of tickets needed. Please email him as soon as possible if you would like to attend so he can order seats. Tickets will be approx. $5-7 depending on where the seats are purchased and if you are a PSUBAMS member. You will need to tell him in the email how many seats you need.

M.S. Defense:

James Marquis will defend his M.S. thesis on Wednesday, 22 June 2005 at 9:00 a.m. in 529 Walker Building. The title of his talk is "Kinematic observations of misocyclones observed along boundaries during IHOP."

Weiguo Wang passed his Ph.D. defense. Congratulations Weiguo!

All EMS alumni and their families are invited for an "Arts Festival" breakfast on Saturday, July 16 from 9-11 a.m. on the ground floor of Deike Building. Please reserve in advance by contacting GEMS at 814-863-4667, gems@ems.psu.edu, or by completing the [online reservation form.] If you call or email GEMS, please provide the number of adults and the number of children under 12 that will be attending, as well as your graduation year and the department you graduated from. The breakfast is free, but please reserve in advance!

Alumnus Paul Tag (‘66, ‘68, ‘77) has recently completed his first novel, which was published by iUniverse. The novel, titled Category 5, is an espionage thriller that revolves around meteorology, and in particular, hurricane modification. Some of the background and action in the story takes place at Penn State during the early 1980s since the protagonist is a meteorologist and a Penn State graduate. Four years ago Paul retired from his career as a research meteorologist at the Naval Research Laboratory in order to write fiction. University Announces Change to Fall 2005 Semester Calendar. Beginning fall semester 2005, the first day of classes (August 30) will follow a TUESDAY class schedule. But, the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holiday (November 22) will follow a FRIDAY class schedule. [See full announcement.]

June 20 Monday—Last date for a summer graduate to submit a draft of the master’s thesis to the Thesis Office for format review

June 24 Friday—Classes end for first six-week summer session.

June 24 Friday—Withdrawal deadline for first six-week summer session.

June 27 Monday—Final Exams

June 29 Wednesday—Classes begin for second six-week summer session.

July 1 Friday—last date for a summer graduate to pass final doctoral defense
(dept. must return report form to Graduate Enrollment Services immediately)
