Did You Know?

On July 11, 1992, a Japanese rancher told Tokyo reporters that he outfitted his cattle with pocket pagers.
He said it took the cows about a week to learn that the beep meant that it was time to eat.
He just dialed the beeper number and they came running.

M.S. Defense:

Steven Greenberg will defend his M.S. thesis on Monday, July 11 at 8:30 a.m. in the Alfred K. Blackadar Library (529 Walker). The title of his talk is "Objective Arctic Cloud Phase Determination."

Stephen Hatlee will defend his thesis on Thursday, July 14 at 9:00 a.m. in the Alfred K. Blackadar Library (529 Walker). The title of his talk is "Subfilter-Scale Modeling in the Terra Incognita."

Lindsey Williams will defend her M.S. Thesis on Friday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the Alfred K. Blackadar Library (529 Walker). The title of her talk is "Dynamics of Southern Hemisphere Spiral Jet and Storm Track."

Paul Knight has been elected as President of the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC) for a two year term beginning in the summer of 2006. [More information about the AASC.]

Altoona Curve Game Outing: PSUBAMS officers are planning a department outing to an Altoona Curve game on Thursday, September 1 (7:05 p.m.) and Zack Byko (zmb102@psu.edu) is still trying to estimate the number of tickets needed. Please email him as soon as possible if you would like to attend so he can order seats. Tickets will be approx. $5-7 depending on where the seats are purchased and if you are a PSUBAMS member. You will need to tell him in the email how many seats you need.

Mark your calendar for the Annual EMS Ice Cream Social to be held on Thursday, July 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Walker Building Courtyard.

All EMS alumni and their families are invited for an "Arts Festival" breakfast on Saturday, July 16 from 9-11 a.m. on the ground floor of Deike Building. Please reserve in advance by contacting GEMS at 814-863-4667, gems@ems.psu.edu, or by completing the [online reservation form.] If you call or email GEMS, please provide the number of adults and the number of children under 12 that will be attending, as well as your graduation year and the department you graduated from. The breakfast is free, but please reserve in advance!

Meteorology Weather Camp for grades 9, 10, and 11 takes place this week from July 10-15.

Office Moves, New Arrivals and Departures:

--Jon Nese started on July 1. His office is 505 Walker (Phone 3-4076).

--Michael Mann will officially begin in August but you might find him in Walker from time to time before then. His office is 523 Walker (Phone 3-4075).

--A fond farewell to Brian Ayers who has accepted a position with the DEP in Harrisburg, PA. Congratulations Brian!

--Lee Grenci and Dave Babb both have an office in the Earth Engineering Sciences Building, but they also will share 607 Walker for office hours and meeting with students. Their phone number in Walker is 3-4227.

The American Geological Institute has announced it's "theme" for Earth Science Week (Oct. 9-15) and new national contests for 2005. For more information about Earth Science Week activities and contests visit http://www.earthsciweek.org/

Meteorology alumnus establishes EMS Trustee Matching Scholarship. James H. ('53, '55) and Joan E. Meyer have donated over $50,000 to establish a Trustee Scholarship to support undergraduate meteorology students with need, who are pursuing studies in physical meteorology. [More]

PSU alumnus ('78), expert meteorologist, and competitive bodybuilder, Joe Bastardi, recently won the Masters Division at the U.S.A. Bodybuilding Championships and placed third in his class in the Open Division. [Full Story]

University Announces Change to Fall 2005 Semester Calendar. Beginning fall semester 2005, the first day of classes (August 30) will follow a TUESDAY class schedule. But, the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holiday (November 22) will follow a FRIDAY class schedule. [See full announcement.]

Meteo 580: For those students who still need to take Meteo 580 (Communication of Meteorological Research) this coming academic year, it is being offered in Fall 2005 as well as Spring 2006. The class meets on Friday from 1:25 - 2:15 p.m.
