Did You Know?

More than 8,000 people perished Sept. 8, 1900, when a category 4 hurricane barreled into Galveston, Texas.
Waves were higher than 15 feet and winds howled at 130 mph, destroying more than half of the island's homes.
This is the deadliest hurricane on record.

Promotions (effective July 1):

  • Jenni Evans has been promoted to Professor.
  • Eugene Clothiaux has been promoted to Associate Professor.

Ken Davis has been named a John T. Ryan, Jr. Faculty Fellow effective July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2008. The fellowship is provided to outstanding faculty members in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences to assist them in continuing and further their contributions in teaching, research, and public service.

M.S. Thesis Defense:

Amy Hasse will be defending her M.S. thesis in the Alfred K. Blackadar Reading Room (529 Walker) at 1:30 on Tuesday, July 19. The title of her talk is "Development of a Web-Based Water-Quality Assessment Tool Using Remotely Senses Data."

Computer Forecasts Enhance Farm Production and Species Diversity. The Center for Environmental Informatics in conjunction with The Pennsylvania State Climatologist's Office under the direction of Paul Knight, and Dr. Erick DeWolf, Department of Plant Pathology has developed a wheat fursarium head blight tool that provides a daily risk assessment for the potential outbreak of the fursarium pathogen. Paul Knight has been elected as President of the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC) for a two year term beginning in the summer of 2006. [More information about the AASC.]

Altoona Curve Game Outing: PSUBAMS officers are planning a department outing to an Altoona Curve game on Thursday, September 1 (7:05 p.m.) and Zack Byko (zmb102@psu.edu) is still trying to estimate the number of tickets needed. Please email him as soon as possible if you would like to attend so he can order seats. Tickets will be approx. $5-7 depending on where the seats are purchased and if you are a PSUBAMS member. You will need to tell him in the email how many seats you need.

--Michael Mann will officially begin in August but you might find him in Walker from time to time before then. His office is 523 Walker (Phone 3-4075).

--A fond farewell to Brian Ayers who has accepted a position with the DEP in Harrisburg, PA. Congratulations Brian!

--Lee Grenci and Dave Babb both have an office in the Earth Engineering Sciences Building, but they also will share 607 Walker for office hours and meeting with students. Their phone number in Walker is 3-4227.

University Announces Change to Fall 2005 Semester Calendar. Beginning fall semester 2005, the first day of classes (August 30) will follow a TUESDAY class schedule. But, the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holiday (November 22) will follow a FRIDAY class schedule. [See full announcement.]
