Colloquium: This week's colloquium is the Terry
and Carmen Tarbell Lecture in Meteorology, presented
by Dr. Keith Seitter, Executive Director of the American
Meteorological Society. His lecture titled, "The Role
of AMS in Fostering 'Partnerships' within the Weather and Climate
Enterprise," will be held on Thursday,
September 15 at 4:00 p.m. in 112 Walker Building. The Department's

The Meteorology
Department Fall Picnic will be held Sunday,
September 18 at 1:00 p.m. in Tudek Park (rain or shine!).
All faculty, staff, students, family and friends are welcome. Chi
Epsilon Pi will provide the standard picnic fare including hamburgers,
hot dogs, salads, chips, pop, and desserts. The cost of the picnic
is $3 per person to cover the food expenses. Please pay any Chi
Epsilon Pi officer by Friday, September 16, so they can get an idea

Pre-Defense: Ankur Desai will present
his Ph.D. pre-defense on Monday, Sept. 19
at 12:45 p.m. in 529 Walker. The title of his talk is "Scaling
of Regional Land-Atmosphere Fluxes of Carbon Dioxide with Mesoscale
Observation Networks."

in 481) are required to enter, and everyone else is encouraged to
enter. Cost is $2 for a year of forecasting excitement and prizes.

the Penn State Branch of the American Meteorological Society, will
be holding its first meeting of the semester on Monday,
September 19 at 6:00 p.m. in 112 Walker Building. Our
featured speaker will be Dr. Michael Mann,
who will present on "The Role of El Nino in Climate Change."
We will also be taking care of general business to prepare for the
year. Everyone is welcome to attend. Pizza and refreshments will

next PhD Candidacy Exam will next be given in December, 2005 after
finals week or in early January, 2006 before spring classes start.

Penn
State's Fall Career Days is scheduled for the week of September
19-23, 2005 in the Bryce Jordan Center. In response, the EMS
Undergraduate Student Council has invited the companies attending
to its Fall Recruiter Reception, to be held Tuesday,
September 20th at 9am in the Deike Mineral Museum. The purpose
of the reception is to inform recruiters about EMS programs and
the skills EMS students possess that can benefit their companies.
In addition,
each attending recruiter will receive a CD containing a database
of resumes submitted by current EMS undergrads. This is a great
opportunity to get your name and resume out before the career fair
even starts! If you would like your resume included on the CD, please

with your name, major, and current year (sr., jr., etc.) by Thursday,

to up to $8,000 of scholarship support for each in their junior

Fall
2006 Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Undergraduate Fellowships:
The EPA, as part of its Greater Research Opportunities
(GRO) program, is offering undergraduate fellowships for bachelor-level
students in environmentally related fields of study. The
deadline for receipt of pre-applications is Nov. 3, 2005.
The Agency plans to award approx. 15 new fellowships by
July 21, 2006. Eligible students will receive support for their
junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship
at an EPA facility during the summer between their junior and senior
years. The fellowship provides up to $17,000 per year of academic
support and up to $7,500 of internship support for a three-month
