April 9th, 2009: PSUBAMS Elections. PSUBAMS held its annual election to select officers for the 2009/2010 executive board. Thanks to all in attendance and a special thanks to all nominees. PSUBAMS would like to welcome our new officers: President Brad Stamm, Vice President Nick Vita, Treasurer Felicia Machover, Secretary Kyle Bourchert, and Community Outreach Michelle Palmer. Congratulations to our new executive board for next year!
March 31st, 2009: PSUBAMS Movie Night. PSUBAMS held its annual movie night in the newly renovated weather station. Students enjoyed each other's company and treated themselves to a nice break from the semester. Freshly popped popcorn, cookies, and soft drink refreshments were served. Appropriately, the movie Twister was previewed. PSUBAMS Movie Night was a casual and relaxing get-together for members.
March 26th, 2009: Paul Heppner, VP of Delaware/Philadelphia AMS Branch. Paul Heppner provided an informative talk about his career experiences in meteorology. A Penn State alum, Mr. Heppner relived the old days as a student in Walker Building. He discussed his career transition from broadcast meteorology to information technology, as well as the pros and cons of both fields. Mr. Heppner showed aviation weather products that he provides to his clients. The meeting offered a unique opportunity to learn about aviation weather and information technology in meteorology.
February 9th, 2009: Town Hall Meeting about the AMS Conference. PSUBAMS held a town hall-style meeting to discuss the AMS Annual Meeting this past January and talk about possible improvements for next year's meeting in Atlanta. All attendees of the conference were encouraged to come to the meeting and talk about their thoughts and experiences. Also during the meeting, Dean Hellman spoke about the advantages of applying for Laureate status in the newly created EMS EMSAGE program. The meeting was a great opportunity to learn more about the benefits of attending an AMS conference as well as learning about the new EMSAGE program.
January, 2009: AMS Annual Meeting. With the help of the AMS, PSUBAMS is proud to have been able to send over 30 Penn State students to the conference, which is the most ever sent to an AMS conference. Events kicked off on January 10th with the start of 8th Annual AMS Student Conference. During the AMS Annual Meeting, members had the opportunity to attend lectures from speakers on a wide range of meteorology topics. A networking reception was held on Tuesday, January 13th with Penn State hosting a reception for all students, faculty, and alumni to attend. We give a special thanks to all who made this trip possible and we look forward to Atlanta in 2010!
November 17th, 2008: Zack Byko, Mars Snackfoods. Zack Byko spoke about his experiences working as a meteorologist for the Mars candy company. Both Zack, along with coworker Greg Harnish, presented a unique perspective of weather purchasing decisions, by offering an interactive case study in which members worked through a real-life weather risk scenario. With endless supplies of chocolate bars given out as prizes, members agree, this meeting was pretty sweet!
November 13th, 2008: Matt Glazewski, NOAA Corps. Matt Glazewski, an officer in the NOAA commissioned officer corps and 2005 graduate of Penn State Meteorology, spoke about opportunities available to young men and women in the NOAA Corps. Matt shared his experiences onboard NOAA research ships and talked about a few of the exciting assignments in the NOAA Corps, including piloting a P3 'Hurricane Hunter' aircraft.
November 5th, 2008: Internship Meeting. Students shared internship experiences and spoke about opportunities available in the field of meteorology. Thank you to all who presented!
October 16th, 2008: Graduate School Informational Meeting. Dr. Eugene Clothiaux, along with Penn State grad students Luna Rodriguez and Katie Walls, provided an informative discussion of graduate school and the admissions process. A question-and-answer session allowed members to ask some of their most burning questions. Topics included application deadlines, funding, GRE's, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. Special thanks to Dr. Clothiaux, Luna, and Katie!
September 23rd, 2008: Ken Carey - 'A Lifetime of Growth and Success through Mentorship.' PSUBAMS hosted special guest Ken Carey, who spoke about the benefits of mentorship and networking in the field of meteorology. Mr. Carey provided interesting anecdotes about his own career experiences and great insight about a program in which he is actively involved, the AMS Private Sector Mentorship Program. After the meeting Mr. Carey joined a handful of PSUBAMS members for a trip to the campus creamery for an ice cream cone and chat in a more informal setting.
September 11th, 2008: Mentorship Meeting. PSUBAMS kicked off the semester with an ice cream social and mentorship meeting. After chatting over ice cream, this year's PSUBAMS officers introduced themselves to new members and laid out plans for the coming year. Members were then paired in a mentor partnership with older undergraduate students and some graduate students sharing common interests in Meteorology. The remainder of the meeting was set aside for the new mentorship partners to get to know one another.
September 1st, 2008: PSUBAMS/CWS Spikes Baseball Game. Students enjoyed a Labor Day outing to a minor-league baseball game at Medlar Field hosted by the State College Spikes. Over 30 students and faculty attended the event, which featured picture perfect weather throughout the entire game. Even though the Spikes fell short of winning, not much could dampen the excitement of the cheering PSUBAMS fans. An evening at the ballpark was a great kickoff to the start of a new year of PSUBAMS.
December 4th, 2007: Dr. John Scala, TV private consultant meteorologist, spoke to students and faculty at a PSUBAMS meeting about the late severe weather outbreak in Pennsylvania on December 1st, 2006. Dr. Scala gave attendees a full synopsis of the tornado event that occurred near Halifax, PA. Overall, it was a great presentation and PSUBAMS sends a special thank you to Dr. Scala for coming to visit.
Friday, November 30th, 2007: Jim Berman, General Manager from WHP-CBS 21 in Harrisburg came to Penn State to speak to student about the world of television and television meteorology. He informed students on how he goes about looking for potential meteorologists to work at his station. He also allowed students to critique a video of a potential applicant for his TV station in order to make it clear what he and other general managers looks for in TV Meteorologists. Over all it was a great meeting and student members of PSUBAMS and of the Penn State Meteorology program enjoyed his visit.
Friday, November 9th, 2007: PSUBAMS/CWS Date Auction. Event was able to raise more than $1000. 75% of the money will be donated to Thon. A special thanks goes to everyone who participated in this event and help make it a success.
November, 2007: PSUBAMS Photo contest. The results are in for those photos selected be in this year's PSUBAMS Photo Calendar. Congratulations to those whose pictures were selected.
Friday, October 26th, 2007: Dr. John G. W. Kelley, research meteorologist for the Marine Modeling and Analysis Programs at NOAA's Coast Survey Development Laboratory, and Penn State Meteorology program Alum presented a special PSUBAMS/CWS seminar in 112 Walker Building titled "NOAA's GIS Web Mapping Portal to Real-Time Coastal Observations and Forecasts." PSUBAMS and CWS send a special thanks to Dr. Kelly for speaking at the event.
