Weather/Climate Data Scientist Internship (Weather Downscaling) – BASF Digital Farming

Where the Chemistry Happens
We are currently seeking an individual like you for a weather and climate data scientist internship in our Digital Farming organization. The BASF Digital Farming team develops weather, remote sensing, and model-based agricultural solutions for addressing crop production challenges and components: disease and nutrient management, yield prediction, phenology, seeding, and sustainability.

In the weather/climate data intern role, you will develop data-driven and machine learning downscaling methods that improve estimates of field-specific agrometeorological variables using state-of-the-art weather station observations and various historical and forecast weather/climate geospatial datasets. You will have the opportunity to interface closely with BASF Digital Farming’s R&D teams – weather, remote sensing, agricultural modeling, and data science– to provide support for model design, implementation, and use.

This is an excellent opportunity to not only expand your knowledge in weather/climate and applications to agronomy, but also gain valuable practical experience in modern data science packages and frameworks, geospatial analytics, and AWS cloud technologies.

Formula for Success

  • Degree progression or R&D experience in one or more of the following: atmospheric sciences, earth sciences, agronomic sciences, computer science, or geography
  • Experience or familiarity with at least one modern data science language, preferably Python or R (Python strongly preferred)
  • Experience or familiarity with weather/climate statistical downscaling methods, data wrangling and analyzing both weather station observations and geospatial weather/climate datasets
  • Strong interest in combining meteorology, climatology, remote sensing, and agronomic science to address complex crop production challenges and environmental sustainability
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills for working with a remote team
