The Environmental Studies (ENV) Department at the University of Portland seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in fluid Earth processes to begin August 2021. Specialties might include, but are not limited to, atmospheric science, oceanography, or hydrology. A commitment to undergraduate teaching is essential, ideally supported by past evidence of effective teaching at any level. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the desire and ability to engage undergraduates in a productive, peer-reviewed research program.

The ENV Department is committed to diversifying our curriculum and our faculty. We have recently added a course in the disparate impacts of environmental science policy and are currently hiring a new colleague in environmental policy. To support our future efforts in this area, the successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusion work within or transferable to higher education. We are also committed to actively recruiting underrepresented students in research and participate in a transparent, application-based hiring process for undergraduate research assistants. In this vein, we are particularly interested in candidates who have experience engaging with underrepresented students.

This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position with benefits. Benefits include: medical & dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, sick time, tuition remission benefits, retirement contributions (generally after 2 years of employment), and eligibility for the University’s home purchase assistance program. (Please note that eligibility for all University benefits is subject to applicable policies, practices, and requirements.)

For full consideration, please submit complete applications including all required materials no later than October 5, 2020.

The candidate will teach existing upper-level undergraduate classes (including laboratories) in climatology, oceanography, and/or new courses in their disciplinary specialty. There is also the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary offerings, including collaboration with a new environmental policy faculty member.

Course load is generally 6 courses per year, with labs counting as individual courses.

Education and Experience
Required: PhD in Earth Science or related field.
Required: Demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusion work within or transferable to higher education; these should be described in the cover letter, teaching statement, and/or diversity statement.
