Cal/Val Scientist for Advanced Baseline Imager
Department: UMD/ESSIC/CISESS
Starting Salary: Commensurate with experience

Duties:
The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) is a NOAA cooperative institute hosted at the University of Maryland's Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC). It is seeking a scientist to support the calibration and validation of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on GOES-16/17/T/U and the Imager on earlier GOES.
The candidate will join a team that will plan and prepare for satellite instrument calibration before launch; execute and report the Post-Launch Tests (PLT) and Post-Launch Product Tests (PLPT); assess and monitor the accuracy of radiometric and geometric calibration for all channels of GOES imaging systems that are in operation; detect and verify reported calibration anomaly; investigate root cause of anomaly; propose, evaluate, and recommend options to correct, upgrade, or improve calibration algorithm; verify and evaluate the implementation of modification; and communicate with various stakeholders about the satellite instrument calibration.
Qualifications:
The candidate must have:
- Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science or engineering;
- Skills of quantitative data analytics;
- Experience with processing remote sensing data using a variety of languages such as IDL, Python, MatLab, C++, FORTRAN, etc.;
- Ability to work in a team;
- Communication (verbal and written) proficiency; and
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident (“Green Card”).
Additionally, desirable experience and skills include:
- Post-graduate degree;
- Experience with satellite data applications or satellite senor calibration and characterization; and
- Peer-reviewed publications or oral presentation at major science conferences.
