CIMMS Research Associate – Data Visualization and Verification

The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) seeks to fill a Research Associate position for its collaborative research with scientists at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman, Oklahoma. The incumbent will contribute to NSSL’s Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) project (http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/projects/mrms/). This position will work in Norman, OK at the National Weather Center (NWC), a highly collaborative operational, research and academic environment.

Background
NSSL in collaboration with CIMMS has developed a cutting-edge system to assimilate radar, rain gauge, lightning, satellite and atmospheric environmental data into a single system to aid in warning-decision making within the National Weather Service. This system, Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS), includes several tools for data analytics and workflow. The incumbent for this position will assist with the research into methods for using cloud and web-based tools for data visualization and verification of the various data output from the MRMS system.

The principal duties of this position are:

  1. Develop technical expertise with the current MRMS web visualization system and with the various processes, programs, and data flow that constitute the existing system;
  2. Research and explore new web-based software, approaches and methods for visualizing real-time data generated by the MRMS system in a cloud computing environment;
  3. Research and explore methods for improving system performance of the MRMS web based visualization system in a cloud computing environment;
  4. Work closely with other groups and organizations to understand current and future data visualization requirements;
  5. Perform related duties as assigned.

The minimum qualifications for the position are:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with at least three (3) years of full time related experience or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Physics, or other statistics based science related area;
  • Experience with development and implementation of web-based applications using HTML5, CSS3, JS and PHP or node.js.;
  • Strong familiarity with the UNIX/Linux operating environment and version control services like git, redmine, or subversion;
  • Programming skills with web languages and development areas such as React, Angular, web graphics and plotting, front-end development, back-end development, scripting, and software support.

Other preferences include; experience debugging and/or troubleshooting software issues, experience working with complex software systems, skills with docker/containers and AWS a plus. Excellent oral and written communication skills are highly desired as well as ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others. Supervision will be provided by CIMMS staff. Technical oversight will be provided by CIMMS staff and NSSL Federal staff. This is a non-supervisory position, although the incumbent may serve as a leader of technical teams.
