Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to support a new, NOAA-funded, research project. This project will use long-term measurements from NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory's (GML) Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network, NOAA aircraft campaigns, and TROPOMI satellite greenhouse gas measurements to fully quantify the impact of COVID-19 on US non-CO2 Greenhouse Gas emissions. This project team is composed of scientists from NOAA/GML, NOAA/CSL, the US EPA, and a research group from John’s Hopkins University. This Post-Doctoral Associate will work closely with project team members to ensure the progress and success of this project. Specifically, they will conduct HYSPLIT transport simulations to generate footprints for the atmospheric measurements mentioned above to support in-situ and satellite inversion analyses. They will also analyze the atmospheric measurements and emission results from atmospheric inverse modeling and US GHG inventories to quantify the COVID-19 impacts. We will also expect the selected candidate to summarize these scientific findings, present them to other project team members and in scientific conferences, and publish them in peer-reviewed journals.

This position duration is for two years, with the possibility of extension based on performance and the availability of funding.

  • Learn to conduct HYSPLIT transport simulations using NOAA supercomputers and parallelize these processes to increase computing efficiency.
  • Analyze atmospheric trace gas measurements and emissions derived from atmospheric inverse modeling and inventory methods for quantifying COVID-19 on US national and regional non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Discuss progress regularly with other project members.
  • Present key research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals.


  • Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, oceanography, environmental sciences, geosciences, chemistry, statistics, data sciences, computer sciences or other quantitative science or engineering fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct data analyses and communicate results to the scientific community via peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Proficiency in computer programming in python or MATLAB.
