NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) is encouraging applications for a Research Scientist to join our team at CU/CIRES. This position's primary responsibility is to conduct research on advancing the atmospheric physics suite in NOAA's Unified Forecast System (UFS), which is a fully coupled (atmosphere/ocean/land/sea-ice/wave) model for weather prediction and Earth system simulations. The individual in this position will participate in a team effort to develop and test parameterization components of atmospheric physics, focusing on their interaction to improve the UFS' skills in prediction applications on various spatial and temporal scales. Specific research activities in this position will include applying innovative diagnostic techniques to identify and mitigate atmospheric model biases and using observations to improve the representation of physical processes concerning the interaction between radiation and clouds. The successful candidate will not only be performing cutting-edge research on the representation of physical processes in atmospheric models, but contributing directly to the improvement of NOAA's operational forecast systems that are used to protect life and property.
