GIS Hydrometeorologist

SALARY: Commensurate with knowledge, skills and experience

Be part of a rapidly growing meteorological engineering company in Fort Collins, Colorado.  We are seeking a qualified GIS Hydrometeorologist conduct storm precipitation analyses using a GIS-based software system (MetStorm®), compile hydrometeorological data for hydrologic modeling, manage our GIS data and take part in a variety of interesting projects.  We are seeking a responsible and motivated individual to become part of our small, but active and exciting team of eight professionals, where your impact will be highly appreciated, realized and valued. Duties and responsibilities

  • Operate MetStorm® for analyzing storm precipitation; prepare maps, documentation and other deliverables
  • Seek, acquire, reformat and quality control precipitation data from rain gauge networks
  • Digitize storm maps, create cartographic maps, evaluate/QC precipitation and prepare deliverables
  • Manage, maintain and develop GIS weather/climate-related databases
  • Design, code, implement and document software/scripts to improve speed, accuracy and efficiency of storm analyses and other data processing tasks
  • Prepare and post blogs on extreme precipitation events
  • Aid project managers in a variety of interesting tasks, such as data mining, literature searches, web page updates/enhancements, meeting/conference prep, data analysis, map creation, etc.


  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, meteorology, atmospheric science, computer science or related field
  • Minimum 2 years GIS experience
  • Minimum 1 year experience scripting and/or programming

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of statistics, meteorology, NEXRAD radar and hydrology pertaining to precipitation
  • Familiarity and experience working with data types and formats associated with meteorological and climatological data
  • Strong understanding of GIS in the Windows and Linux environments
  • Knowledge and experience of:
    • ArcGIS
    • Basic Linux navigation
    • Windows, Excel, Word
  • Familiarity and experience working with large GIS data in a variety of formats
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills for reacting to critical issues quickly and efficiently
  • Devoted, honest and willing to work hard among a small, rapidly growing business environment

Desired Skills

  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL and PostGIS
  • Knowledge and experience of:
    • Internet Map Servers
    • GeoServer
    • Perl and/or Python
    • Linux scripting, including c-shell and awk/nawk
    • Git
    • WordPress and HTML
    • R
  • Basic understanding of regional frequency analyses and extreme precipitation events
  • Some familiarity with hydrologic modeling, precipitation input requirements and reanalysis data
  • Ability to maintain, manage and update web pages with WordPress
