Salary Range: $42,592 to $101,503 Per Annum

About the Job:  The Department of Navy is currently soliciting applications from qualified applicants to fill one position as a Meteorologist at FNMOC.  The employee will be responsible for upgrading, evaluating, and maintaining atmospheric models in an automated high-performance computing environment.  The employee will work in an operational setting, with a diverse team of highly-educated, technically proficient and warfighting-experienced Sailors, Civilians and Contractors. 

Basic Requirements:  In the Government Service, a Meteorologist (1340) requires a degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included at least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science.  See the Office of Personnel Management website for more information. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional knowledge, skills, and abilities are required at the full performance level. The level of the GS appointment depends on education, experience, and the degree to which these knowledge, skills, and abilities requirements are satisfied.  

  • Knowledge of theoretical meteorology, including the dynamics of the atmosphere, mesoscale meteorology, and the application of computer methods of numerical weather analysis and prediction. 
  • Advanced knowledge of the theories, methods and techniques of professional meteorology sufficient to improve forecast guidance and the performance of tactical decision aids for one or more of the major product areas. 
  • Knowledge of METOC satellites, their sensors, the algorithms used to produce environmental estimates, and the METOC products derived from satellite data. 
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and standard techniques for post-processing and evaluating atmospheric numerical analysis and forecast products. 
  • Proficient knowledge of a programming language such as Python and/or FORTRAN, an operating system such as LINUX, software and database configuration management, and visualization of data sets.
  • Knowledge of software engineering techniques as applied to the development and maintenance of automated, real-time systems.
  • Skill in public speaking and in technical writing.
  • Understanding of environmental processes relevant to military missions.
