POSITION OVERVIEW

The meteorologist will work with Cheniere’s senior meteorologist to provide forecasts and weather information to support the company’s day to day LNG operations, as well as decisions on the trading desk in Houston. Weather forecasting will run the gamut, from site-specific forecasts at hourly and daily timescales to high level overviews of U.S. and global weather on monthly and seasonal timescales. The meteorologist will effectively communicate this information to numerous internal stakeholders. They will also work to improve, enhance, and streamline current processes and assist the gas supply team in analysis of natural gas market fundamentals. 

KNOWLEDGE

The successful candidate should understand all elements of weather forecasting at multiple timescales and over multiple, diverse regions, both at the synoptic scale and the mesoscale. Knowledge of weather models and their biases and how to interpret their output is critical, in addition to having a solid understanding of forecasting tropical weather, specifically with respect to Atlantic Basin and Gulf of Mexico tropical systems. At minimum, a high-level, general understanding of how weather can impact energy demand.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS)

  • Education and Certifications:  Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science is required, a Master’s degree in these fields is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 to 3 years experience working in the field of Meteorology, with a focus on forecasting. Experience in the energy industry is not required, but is preferred. A basic, high-level understanding of weather impacts to energy markets is expected.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional communication skills are required, specifically an ability to translate complex weather forecasts into language focusing on business impacts
    • Being comfortable and flexible in rapidly evolving weather and/or business operations scenarios
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel and PowerPoint), and the ability to learn new software or applications
    • A working knowledge of programming and ability to become proficient with additional programming languages is expected (i.e.: Python, R, Matlab, VBA)
    • Self-starting, with an ability to perform timely work and conduct new research
    • Interest in research advances in forecasting and atmospheric science to ensure that internal methods of producing forecasts remain ahead of the curve
    • Willingness to understand other aspects of the business both within and outside the gas supply group, as the candidate will frequently interact with people in diverse corners of the organization and will occasionally take on research not directly related to weather
    • Effective time management and organizational skills
