Meteorologist

Join a high-impact organization on the front lines of addressing the climate challenge. Climate Central seeks an energetic, experienced meteorologist who is passionate about communicating the science behind climate change and how it affects people, particularly the weather/climate connection. Strong candidates will have experience analyzing multiple sources of weather and climate data, on-air experience, strong relationships with the broadcast meteorology community, and demonstrated skills in translating the science for both professional and lay audiences. The meteorologist will be an integral part of our impactful Climate Matters program, reporting directly to the Director. 

About Climate Central 

Climate Central is an independent group of scientists and science translators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects people’s lives. We use science, big data, and tech to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. We address climate science, sea level rise, extreme weather, energy, and related topics. We collaborate nationwide with TV meteorologists, journalists, and other respected messengers, reaching broad audiences through local voices. Founded in 2008, we work in almost every U.S. media market and our research and imagery have appeared in well over 100 nations. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Function as a key member in the organization’s Climate Matters program which provides climate information, resources, and support to local television meteorologists and journalists 
  • Help to develop climate-science-based story lines, graphics, animations, and other resources for the fast-growing Climate Matters network 
  • Work with scientific staff to identify priority areas of research and relevant data sets
  • Provide meteorology expertise in support of Climate Central’s other program areas including Realtime Climate, Weather Power, and Sea Level Rise
  • Be a voice and liaison for the organization to both the operational and research-based weather community
  • Serve as principal contact for network of local television meteorologists 
  • Collaborate and support the Communication team in the organization’s social media strategy and execution
  • Represent Climate Central in media interviews 
  • Represent the organization at conferences and workshops 

Essential qualifications 

  • Degree in Meteorology; understanding of climate science 
  • 2-3 years of experience as an on-camera meteorologist; CBM and/or NWA seal preferred 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively conduct outreach with professional colleagues
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Strong relationships within the local TV weather community
  • Must enjoy working as a team player in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Willingness to travel occasionally is required 
  • Ability to translate weather and climate information into Spanish a plus

Location 

Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J. A meaningful amount of presence at headquarters will be important, but hybrid and partial-time remote work are options for this position.
