We are seeking a post-doctoral associate in the area coupled hydrologic, biogeochemical, and water quality modeling. Successful applicants will join USDA- and NASA-funded projects focused on regional/watershed scale ecosystems modeling in the U.S.
The successful candidate will conduct research within a group of scientists applying agricultural, hydrologic and ecosystem modeling to inform global change research. In particular, the researcher will contribute to multi-disciplinary, multi-institution collaborative research projects investigating the sustainability of biofuel production, ecosystem carbon cycling, and the potential impacts of climate change on water resources. This is an ideal position for a researcher with a desire to contribute science to decision making on challenges of food and water security under climate change and provides opportunities for collaboration and integration across disciplines.
The post-doctoral associate will be hired by the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at University of Maryland College Park and will have close collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory (HRSL). Salary is commensurate with experience and University benefits will be included. The initial appointment will be 24 months. If good progress is made, extension of the appointment for a period of not less than 12 months may be granted.
Position Activities:
The selected candidate will collaborate with ESSIC and HRSL scientists on designing and implementing simulation modeling studies at site to region scales. Specifically, the candidate will contribute to studies exploring the dynamics of agricultural and forest ecosystems, and the biogeochemical cycling across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces, and the sustainability of traditional and alternative biofuel production systems. The researcher will participate in designing and implementing scenario experiments, including investigating the potential consequences of alternative management practices and climate change on coupled natural and human systems. The researcher will primarily be developing and testing watershed scale hydrologic and biogeochemical models, large scale geospatial data from multiple sources (e.g. remote sensing images and observed water quality parameters in streams), and analysis and publication of results. He/share will have the opportunity to coordinate modeling activities with field researchers as well as socio-economic modeling teams.

Minimum requirements: Candidates must have a PhD in hydrology, biogeochemistry, ecology, geography, soil science, agronomy, or a related field. Experience in operating biophysical models (such as SWAT, CLM, EPIC, DNDC, and DayCent) and working in GIS and database environments (such as ArcGIS and PostgreSQL) is required. Computer programming skills with Fortran and Python are desired. Candidates must be able to work in a group environment and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries.
