Job description

The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO- https://ciwro.ou.edu/) seeks to fill a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position for its collaborative research as a Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will contribute to NSSL’s Warn-on-Forecast (WoF) program (https://wof.nssl.noaa.gov/).

Background

A major activity at NSSL over the past decade has been the research, development and evaluation of storm-scale Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) modeling for hazardous weather threats. Accurate and reliable 3D depiction of severe convection is critical to successfully develop NWP model guidance. One of the biggest challenges associated with this work is that the three- dimensional state of the atmosphere at the convection scale is poorly known. To address the issue, this research will develop a regional and rapidly updating 3D atmospheric analysis system using operational Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation based ensemble Kalman filter and ensemble- variational data assimilation system. Results from this high-resolution analysis will be used to help verify the NSSL WoF System ensemble predictions and help improve model guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of a rapid update, storm-scale 3D gridded analysis system of severe convective thunderstorms for detection and NWP model verification using the latest technologies in HPC cloud computing.
  • Conduct high-quality research for improving the analysis performance by applying new or improved data-assimilation This may involve processing observations, conducting data assimilation sensitivity experiments and evaluating the analysis performance using existing and/or newly developed verification/diagnostic/visualization tools.
  • Serve as lead or contributing author on scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and on project reports as needed. Present results to funding agencies and at national and international scientific conferences, workshops, and symposia.
  • Creatively and efficiently solves scientific problems, independently or as part of the WoFS program in data assimilation and modeling.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric science or related
  • Advanced knowledge and skill in NWP, data assimilation, and observations of
  • Demonstrated skill in modern Fortran programming, shell scripting and
  • Use of high-performance computer and data analysis/visualization
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • An ability to work both independently and cooperatively with

Information on benefits may be found at https://hr.ou.edu/. The position will be located in Norman, OK (https://www.normanok.gov/about-norman) at the National Weather Center (https://www.ou.edu/nwc). The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is identified.
