Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a motivated postdoctoral research associate to work on observational analysis and model evaluation of aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM; see http://e3sm.org for more information), as part of the “Enabling Aerosol-cloud interactions at GLobal convection-permitting scalES (EAGLES)” project. Targeted at DOE’s leadership computing facilities (e.g., GPU-based systems), the EAGLES project seeks to develop scientifically robust and computational efficient parameterizations to represent aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions with a focus on liquid clouds.

The selected candidate will work with the EAGLES team to develop methodologies of evaluating E3SM at convection-permitting scales using a wide range of routine and field campaign measurements of meteorology, radiation, clouds, and aerosol properties.

The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in performing analyses of measurements, understanding measurement uncertainties, and appropriately comparing observations and model output. In addition, the candidate needs to understand the complex interactions among various processes that control the cloud and aerosol lifecycle.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
