Job description
The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant or associate professor level, beginning August 2024. In exceptional cases, applicants for full professor will also be considered. Applications are encouraged from scientists representing the full spectrum of the atmospheric and oceanic sciences, particularly those having expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) atmospheric radiation, (2) satellite meteorology and remote sensing, (3) mid-latitude weather systems, or (4) subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction. We especially encourage applications from individuals whose research complements the traditional strengths of our department in satellite meteorology, atmosphere and ocean dynamics, and climate/Earth system science and might build on the strong ties to the UW Space Sciences and Engineering Center (SSEC), the NOAA Cooperative Center for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and the Nelson Institute Center for Climatic Research (CCR). The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.
Responsibilities:
The department seeks energetic and creative individuals to develop vigorous research and teaching programs focused on the Earth's atmosphere and oceans.
The successful candidate will create and maintain a strong world-class research program. The candidate will be expected to teach two undergraduate and/or graduate level courses per year, mentor graduate students, and contribute to the intellectual and academic life of the department. University and community service will be expected as appropriate. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to diversity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service.
Education:
Required
PhD in Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences or closely related field is required prior to the start of the appointment.
Qualifications:
The primary selection criteria will be individual excellence in research suggestive of future leadership potential in the field, the ability to contribute to teaching core courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and a strong commitment to the intellectual and academic vitality of the department and university.
Candidates for the Assistant Professor title must have the potential to develop a vibrant research program in their field of specialization.
The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.
Tenured candidates must have demonstrated excellence in scholarly research, teaching, and service which meet the requirements for associate professor with tenure as determined by the Physical Sciences Divisional Committee. Applicants for full professor must also meet department and division requirements for promotion to full.
Demonstrated leadership in research as evidenced by a strong journal publication record and by the ability to independently attain research grants will be a valued asset.
