Job description

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), (, a Federal Government Contractor, is seeking to fill a position for a Programmer/Analyst to work at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction’s (NCEP) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), located in College Park, MD.  NCEP EMC is responsible for the enhancements, transitions-to-operations, and maintenance of more than 20 numerical prediction systems comprising NCEP's operational production suite.  NCEP’s production suite creates forecast guidance products used to derive local and regional forecasts, track severe weather such as hurricanes, and much more.  

The HPC Program Analyst will develop requirements for streamlined, user-friendly workflow for running large weather models in an HPC environment.  Develop, test, and implement software to enable streamlined user-friendly workflow for running models.  Develop and maintain computer system, environment, and scripts that perform data assimilation and run models for numerical weather/ocean/climate prediction.  Analyze program logic and logistics; improve efficiency; develop program documentation.  Provide clear software documentation and operating instructions for all developed software. 

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree plus 5 years of relevant work experience required or Master’s Degree plus 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Direct hands-on experience with development and maintenance of numerical modeling application software on high-end HPC systems.
  • Demonstrated experience programming in Fortran, MPI, and OpenMP.  
  • Shell scripting experience in a RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teams of other technical and domain science experts. 

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Python scripting experience
  • Developing large (operations- or community research-scale) weather or climate prediction modelling and data assimilation systems
  • Familiarity with and experience using software engineering processes, including requirements analysis and specification.
