Job description

To take a leading role in an industry supported program of research to develop a mobile weather radar capability to observe and identify meteorological hazards associated with extreme bushfires. Throughout your appointment you will be expected to actively engage with other researchers including research degree students working on the project and staff from industry partners including Google, State Fire Agencies and the Bureau and Meteorology. Opportunities will become available throughout the tenure of your appointment to gain some teaching experience and to supervise and mentor research degree students. Applicants should also refer to the UQ Academic Criteria for Performance policy. This policy applies to staff at levels A to E, across all of the academic categories - Teaching and Research, Teaching Focused, Research Focused and Clinical Academic.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research

 To plan and coordinate fieldwork including logistics, obtaining permissions and/or permits to access field sites and to engage with local fire management agencies.

 To coordinate and undertake observations of atmospheric processes which will include deployment of portable automatic weather stations, aerological sounding systems and mobile weather radar.

 To support research aimed at using weather radar to identify and track embers from bushfires and associated meteorological hazards.

 Write and publish scholarly papers in leading peer reviewed journals.

 Present research to industry partners, stakeholders and at appropriate conferences.

 To identify opportunities to develop new research and industry engagements and including preparation of research funding applications.

Service and Engagement

 Foster relations with the project’s industry partners and to contribute to initiatives to develop opportunities to secure future research support.

 Contribute to the processes that enable the research team to manage the work of the project, including participate in decision-making and project management.

SELECTION CRITERIA

 PhD in Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Science/Physical Geography or related discipline.

 Demonstrated expert knowledge and experience in the area fire – atmosphere interactions.

 Demonstrated experience in planning and undertaking field based meteorological observations including the use of meteorological radar and data analysis.

 Evidence of innovation in research with high-level skills in numerical data analysis including application of AI to big data.

 Evidence of contribution to research, including publication in leading peer reviewed scientific journals.

 Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

 Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop cooperative research initiatives.

 A good team player with an ability to establish effective professional relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

 Demonstrated experience in conducting fieldwork in remote and harsh environmental settings.
