Job description

Researcher Position: Satellite Data Analysis and Assimilation

Department: UMD/ESSIC/CISESS

Starting Salary: Commensurate with experience

Closing Date: Thursday, December 31, 2020

Duties:

The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies – Maryland (CICESS-MD) seeks to fulfil a researcher position in the area that supports the enhancement of satellite data assimilation in NOAA’s numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems. Primary responsibilities of this position are: i) refinement of passive microwave clear-sky radiance assimilation; ii) refinement of longwave and enabling mid-wave infrared radiance assimilation.  The main scope of the project is to increase the impact and the value of satellite observations while improving the NWP skills.

The successful applicant will work closely with scientists and engineers at University of MD, NOAA Center for Satellite Application & Research (STAR) and their partners at NOAA and NASA centers, industry, and academia. While the position is highly collaborative, the successful applicant is expected to be self-directed. The ambition to learn and work on challenging tasks, the flexibility to adjust to the fast-changing and interactive environment, and the desire to excel are considered to be the most important qualities.

Significant preference is given to those with expertise in satellite observations, radiative transfer modeling, and NOAA operational data assimilation systems. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in software development and visualization are highly valued. Depending on the qualifications, the successful applicant will be employed at the appropriate levels. Starting salary is commensurate with experience. The position is for 12 months with possibility of extension.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: Practical knowledge of satellite data assimilation, expertise in atmospheric radiative transfer modeling, experience with high performance computing using message passing interface. US citizenship or permanent residency is required.
