Job description

Duties:
Seamless Prediction and Predictability from Weather to Subseasonal to Seasonal Scales

Synopsis of Position:

The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office at NASA/GSFC is looking for a scientist to
conduct predictability studies using the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) atmosphere
Seasonal to Subseasonal prediction system (GEOS-S2S).

The successful candidate will have the primary responsibility for studying and determining
the smooth transition of predictability from weather to subseasonal lead times and that
from subseasonal to seasonal lead times. At present, the predictability is
assumed to abruptly transition between one lead and another, in an ad hoc manner. The
large suite of retrospective forecasts with GEOS-S2S will be used to study the transitions
and determine, with appropriate metrics, how the predictability may vary with state or regime.
Machine learning techniques and software will be useful tools in determining the best metrics.

The position entails analysis of GEOS-S2S retrospective forecasts, and will be performed in collaboration with other members of the GMAO seasonal prediction group.  This position is designed for a post-doctoral researcher or an early career scientist with experience in the metrics for seasonal prediction and handling large amounts of data.

Qualifications:

Education:

Masters or Phd in atmospheric or ocean sciences or computer sciences.  Specifics of duties
and responsibilities commensurate with education and experience.

Experience:

3+ years of experience with analyzing results complex scientific models (atmospheric or ocean models or their individual components are preferred).

To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to andrea.m.molod@nasa.gov.
