Software Engineer Data Steward

Department: UMD/ESSIC

Starting Salary: Commensurate with Experience

Closing Date: Saturday, November 19, 2016

Duties:

This position entails establishing an Archival information system for Arctic environmental datasets assembled through the NSF Arctic Data Center program (https://arcticdata.io/) in collaboration with the NOAA/NESDIS/National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and DataONE. Arctic data sets will be submitted to NCEI following DataONE protocols and prepared for long-term preservation within NCEI’s archive and access systems. Tasks will include working within the Open Archival Information System-Reference Model (OAIS-RM) to establish and monitor acquisition and archival services for these data, based on the DataONE Tier 4 Replication Application Programing Interface (API). 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with and an understanding of data management and data storage processes.
  • Understanding and experience with the use of standards-based web services and APIs
  • Programming skills required: C, Python, Perl, UNIX/Linux shell scripting, Java, XML, CGI, Secure web application development.
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to work in a group are also desired.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or a field of science is desired.
  • The Applicant is required to be a US citizen or Permanent Resident
