Support Scientist for Algorithm Development and Validation of land remote sensing products

Department: UMD/ESSIC/CISESS 

Starting Salary: Commensurate with Experience

Duties:

The University of Maryland/Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (UMD/ESSIC) seeks to fill a scientist position for the collaborative research with the NOAA/NESDIS STAR’s satellite land remote sensing science team on algorithm development, validation and monitoring. The position involves the development, testing, and deployment of Temperature (LST), Land Surface Albedo (LSA), Vegetation Index (VI) and Leaf Area Index (LAI) algorithms to be applied to anticipated data from the EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation (EPS-SG). The successful candidate will work on the analysis of the new instrument specifications at the involved channels, as well as initial test of VIIRS land products algorithms on the simulated proxy data. Further improvement of the software is expected in support of the software integration in framework system.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in remote sensing, or geography or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Qualified candidates with an M.S. degree will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of software design, development, and debugging principles
  • Strong knowledge of Fortran/C++ language coding
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with development and deployment of Python packages.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with Linux-based computer systems.
  • Expertise in remote sensing algorithms and dataset.
  • Be able to work collaboratively with the team
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency is required for this position.
