Technical Meteorologist (radar meteorology focus) 

Position Summary:

Weather Analytics is seeking a talented and tech-savvy meteorologist with experience in radar meteorology that can manipulate data and develop algorithms to help serve a number of commercial and government clients.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Play a critical role on the science team, which is responsible for the development, maintenance and integration of weather, climate and other data into solutions that meet the needs of Weather Analytics customers
  • Maintain and enhance automated, real-time model and product software systems
  • Develop new algorithms that build on current capabilities and add to Weather Analytics’ intellectual assets
  • Access and manipulate global, regional and unstructured data sets including, but not limited to, those produced by NOAA
  • Work with Level 2, Level 3, and gridded radar products to develop new products
  • Work with other Weather Analytics staff including data scientists, systems engineers, product developers and business developers 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in meteorology/atmospheric science
  • Five years of post-bachelor’s work experience, with significant programming responsibilities (time spent in graduate school applies towards work experience)
  • Experience managing and manipulating meteorological data files, such as GRIB, netCDF, Binary, and HDF5
  • Significant programming experience in the any of the following languages: Python (preferred), FORTRAN, IDL, UNIX shell scripting, Java, and C/C++
  • Experience with ground or airborne radar datasets, including polarimetric data
  • Experience with visualization of scientific data (GIS is a plus)
  • Excellent skills in communicating scientific work
  • Able to work with minimal supervision in a collaborative team environment 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud computing technologies (Amazon Web Services experience is a plus)
  • Knowledge of machine learning technologies (artificial neural networks, classification/decision trees, clustering algorithms, support vector machines)
  • Sense of humor, personality, and enthusiasm!
