Job description
The Kasuya Research Forest at Kyushu University invites applications for a 4.5-year research appointment at the
assistant professor level in atmospheric biogeoscience and/or ecohydrology. We seek an applicant who has expertise in
theory, modeling and observation of some of the following areas: 1. atmospheric field measurements of surface-
atmosphere exchange of energy, H2O, and CO2 2. ecophysiological measurements of transpiration and photosynthesis at
individual-leaf and/or whole-tree scale 3. biogeochemical measurements of nutrient and water dynamics in soils 4.
ecosystem modeling and analyses using remote sensing data and GIS.
Applicants should demonstrate a strong potential for high-quality teaching as well as for developing a well-funded
and nationally recognized research program. The successful candidate will participate in the research and education
program granted by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, “Proposal for the COE
(Center of Exellence) of Asian Conservation Ecology” (http://sites.google.com/site/asianconservationecologyweb/Home).
in collaboration with researchers of the different research groups

As a component project of this program, we have one Malaysian tropical rainforest site, two Thai tropical seasonal
forest sites, and one Cambodian tropical seasonal forest (rubber plantation) site (the main site in this project) for
the study on carbon and water cycling in Southeast Asian tropical forest ecosystems as well as comparative studies of
biodiversity at the species and gene levels. The potential employee will be expected to be responsible for data
acquisition from these study sites and supervise graduate research using those data in M.A. and Ph.D. courses. Another
requirement is the expectation to contribute to writing proposals for funding and also publications.
Dr. Tomo' omi Kumagai (Kasuya Research Forest, Kyushu University) leads the component project that works with
scientists from Kyushu University and University of Tokyo, Japan, and with various European, American and Asian
