External Scholarships

These scholarships are offered by sources outside Penn State University. Each of these scholarships has their own specific application process.

National Weather Association (NWA) Scholarships:

1) The Arthur C. Pike Scholarship in Meteorology is $1000/year and is open to undergraduate and/or graduate students. Undergraduates must be classified at least as a junior for the semester, which the scholarship is awarded. This will allow second semester sophomores to apply for the scholarship. If the student is classified as a senior they must either have one more fall (Sep. - Dec.) semester to complete after the scholarship is awarded or document that they have been accepted into graduate school. 2.) The NWA David Sankey Minority Scholarship in Meteorology is $1000/year and is open to minority undergraduate and/or graduate students. Undergraduates must be classified at least as a sophomore for the semester which the scholarship is awarded. If the student is classified as a senior they must either have one more fall (Sep. - Dec.) semester to complete after the scholarship is awarded or document that they have been accepted into graduate school. 3.) The NWA AccuWeather Undergraduate Scholarship in Meteorology is $1,000 and open to undergraduate students studying in the broadcast, consulting, or forecasting facets of operational meteorology. NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings scholarship program is designed 1) to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; 2) to increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; 3) to recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the Federal, state and local levels of government; and 4) to recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States. 

Up to $28,425 is available per student: Up to $8,000 of academic assistance per year for full-time study during the junior and senior years; a 10-week, paid ($650/week) internship during the intervening summer; housing subsidy during the internship; round-trip travel to the internship site; and travel expenses to the Hollings scholarship program conference. NASA-USRP Scholarships: 

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is pleased to announce the NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (NASA-USRP) offering undergraduates across the United States mentored research experiences at ten participating NASA Centers during two sessions each calendar year. The NASA-USRP seeks applications from undergraduates enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants must be rising juniors or seniors at the completion of the Spring semester/quarter. Eligible fields of study are academic major or demonstrated coursework concentration in engineering, mathematics, computer science or physical/life sciences. The Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarships:

For graduate study in Engineering, Mathematics and Science. Churchill College, Cambridge University, England. Approximately eleven awards for one year of graduate study leading to a certificate, diploma or Master of Philosophy degree. Campus Application Deadline: usually late October or early November. Harry S. Truman Scholarship:

Campus deadline: usually in September. http://www.truman.gov
Criteria: Juniors/All Majors. Merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students to support graduate or professional school in preparation for a career in government, the non-profit sector, or elsewhere in public service. Eligibility: extensive records of public and community service, leadership, and communication skills
Award: $30,000. To Apply: University nominated award; Download application at web site and submit to 11-A Grange Building. Campus deadline: September; National deadline: January

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program:

Criteria: Each award will fund tuition, fees, and living expenses for up to 6 years. Penn State can only nominate two students! Eligibility: Candidates must be a college senior OR recent graduate (since May '99), have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, plan to attend graduate school in Fall '04, and demonstrate financial need.

Lockheed Martin Scholarships:

Scholarships are available for full-time undergraduate women at Penn State in the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Earth and Mineral Sciences, Health & Human Development, the Eberly College of Science, and the School of Information Sciences and Technology. These scholarships are administered through the Women In the Sciences and Engineering Institute (WISE) at Penn State. More information about who is eligible for these scholarships can be found on the WISE Web site: http://www.equity.psu.edu/wise/. The deadline for 2005 applications is April 4, 2005.

Northern and Central New Jersey Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA):

The Northern and Central New Jersey Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) is a professional organization consisting of professionals interested in the environmental air and waste fields.

This local chapter is once again offering undergraduate scholarships. The scholarship program is open to full-time (i.e. 9 credits or more) undergraduate college students pursuing courses of study leading to a career (or post-graduate study) in the environmental sciences/engineering or environmental management or related fields.

Eligible applicants must either:

1) be a resident of New Jersey within the chapter area (Northern and Central New Jersey) or
2) be attending a college or university within the chapter area.

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 9, 2006.

Udall Scholarships:

In 2006, the Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships of up to $5000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior-level college students. Students must be nominated by their institution. Contact the Undergraduate Fellowships Office in 212 Boucke to apply for nomination.
