The Story of the M33

Dr. Charles Hosler begins the story, "We needed a radar to study cloud formations and precipitation. I had a $250,000 grant and went looking for an Army surplus M33 from the Korean War. I eventually located a Sargent up in Port Erie, Ohio who had some in stock. He had several war surplus radars and one new radar. We haggled for a few minutes and the Sargent finally said, "cover the shipping and I'll send you the new radar." I immediately requested the purchase order, but it got hung up in the bureaucracy. Finally, after several telephone calls from the Sargent, I got on the phone to our purchasing office where I was informed that $2,000 was a lot to spend on a single purchase. I said, "Hey, we're getting a $5 million dollar radar for 2 grand!" Well, the radar arrived and the kind folks over in MRL unloaded it from the flat bed car and took it over near the flower garden."
