Meteorology Alumnus Establishes Trustee Matching Scholarship

University Park, PA -- June 2005

James H. and Joan E. Meyer

In order to help support talented undergraduate meteorology students who have a great financial need, James and Joan Meyer of Silver Spring, Maryland have donated more than $50,000 to establish the James H. and Joan E. Meyer Trustee Scholarship in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The scholarship will provide support to undergraduate students who are pursuing studies in the area of physical meteorology.

A native of St. Mary’s Pennsylvania, Mr. Meyer holds two degrees from Penn State, both in meteorology. He earned an undergraduate degree in 1953 followed by a M.S. in 1955. Previously employed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory, Technical Operations, Inc., Electromagnetic Research Corporation, and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in a variety of applied and physical meteorological research capacities, Mr. Meyer currently serves as President of Meteorological Applications, a consulting firm based in Silver Spring, Maryland.

“We are delighted that Jim and Joan have decided to show their support for our students in this way. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, it has become increasingly important for the College to have the resources necessary to award need-based scholarships to our students,” said Eric J. Barron, Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

The Trustee Matching Scholarship Program, launched in 2002, is a unique matching scholarship initiative aimed at keeping a high-quality college education accessible to all qualified students, regardless of their financial means.

The program’s goal is to raise $100 million in private support for new undergraduate scholarships across the University by June 30, 2007. To underscore its commitment to this effort, the Board of Trustees agreed to match 5 percent of the gift with University funds, and to make these matching funds available to assist students as soon as the donor completes scholarship pledge forms and guidelines. The matching funds continue in perpetuity and are combined with income from the endowment to increase the financial impact of the scholarship.
