Rewarding Student Achievement
Jerome N. Behrmann Award in Meteorology:
Zachary M. Byko
Honors the memory of a meteorology student who died of leukemia soon after graduation.
Jay M. and Katherine Definis Award for Outstanding Student Leadership:
Alexis J. Phillips
Established in 2005 to honor outstanding student leadership abilities within the student organizations of the college.
Ellen Steidle Achievement Award:
John E. Ten Hoeve III (Senior Award)
Established in 1953 by Dean Edward Steidle to honor the memory of his wife.

Established in 1981 to honor Edward Steidle, Dean of the College from 1929 to 1953.
William Arthur Vogely Award Fund:
Amber M. Ortega
Established in 2003 to honor the memory of William A. Vogely, Head of the former Department of Mineral Economics from 1975-1988.
Faculty Mentoring Award in Earth & Mineral Sciences
Jerry Y. Harrington, assistant professor of meteorology, was recognized for his enthusiasm and devotion to ensuring that the students he advises succeed in their classes and in their research. He has boundless energy. Through is lectures he is able to guide the students to think more deeply, which provides them with a richer educational experience. Jerry invests a great deal of time mentoring his students in order for them to meet their career goals and to learn how to be outstanding researchers.
Wilson Award for Outstanding Service
Dennis W. Thomson, professor of meteorology, has provided outstanding leadership and scientific advice to the United States government. His unselfish service in this capacity has brought great recognition and distinction to Penn State, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the Department of Meteorology. Thomson's scientific advice is sought by a wide variety of high-level government agencies and organizations, such as the Department of Defense and the National Academy of Sciences. Thomson has an outstanding record of sustained service to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Thomson was an elected member of the UCAR Board of Directors , as well as a member of their Board of Trustees where he provided valuable insight to their programs. Thomson has served the field of meteorology tirelessly and effectively throughout his career. Organizations recognize and appreciate the depth of his knowledge about the science and technology that affects their agencies along with his ability to assemble the information into the context of their overall needs. He is widely respected among his peers as a researcher and educator, but few can match his record of service to the field. Thomson's philosophy is that it is his duty to his country to provide expertise when called upon. Dennis Thomson was also recognized for mentoring first-year students at Penn State and for his commitment to student success and achievement during their learning experience.
