Three members of the Department of Meteorology were recognized at the annual Ronald McNair Scholars dinner held on April 16th at Cafe Laura on campus. Graduating senior Joshua Walker (left) was honored for completing research on air quality last summer with Prof. Anne Thompson (center). Walker will attend graduate school at the University of California--Davis. Amber Ortega (right), a joint Bachelors-Masters candidate in the Department, and due to graduate next year, has been conducting research in Prof. Brune's lab. Both Walker and Ortega are Ronald McNair Scholars, selected from a nationwide program that is named after Commander R. T. McNair, who perished in the 1986 Challenger spacecraft accident. [View Photo]

UG The 2006 National Weather Association (NWA) David Sankey Minority Scholarship in Meteorology has been awarded to Cho Hin (Richard) Lam of Wilmington, Delaware. This $1,000 scholarship will assist Richard with expenses throughout his junior year at Penn State in the Department of Meteorology. UG Penn State Meteorology student and Schreyer Honors scholar, Zachary Lebo, has garnered a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 2006-2007. Zachary is one of three students (one an honorable mention) to be recognized with this scholarship from Penn State and among only 323 recipients nationwide for the 2006-2007academic year. The scholarship was created by Congress to honor Sen. Barry M. Goldwater and to promote the study of the sciences, mathematics and engineering. Congratulations Zack! NASA Space Grant Fellowships are awarded to outstanding students in fields of study that promote the understanding, assessment and utilization of Space or the NASA Strategic Enterprises: Aero-Space Technology, Earth Science, HEDS, Space Science, Biological and Physical Research. UG Two meteorology undergraduate students, Joshua Walker and Amber Ortega, have been accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (also known as the McNair Scholars Program). This program is designed to prepare minority students in all disciplines for a Ph.D. program and was established in memory of Ronald E. McNair, the African-American astronaut who died in the Challenger space shuttle accident. This internationally-renowned program is available to students at nearly 200 universities and consists of GRE preparation, summer research, and a chance to network with thousands of other Ph.D.-bound students. UG Junior Meteorology student, Steven Greybush, has been accepted into NCAR's Undergraduate Leadership Workshop to be held in Boulder, Colorado from June 19-23, 2006. The purpose of the workshop is to inform students about exciting research and career opportunities in the atmospheric and related sciences. The five-day program will establish informal dialogue between students and research scientists as the students explore the laboratories, instrumentation, and computing facilities that support studies on weather, climate change, solar dynamics, the Sun-Earth system, and impacts of severe weather and climate change on societies around the world.

UG Meteorology undergraduate Ben Root attended the AMS Artificial Intelligence Conference, part of the 2005 AMS Annual Meeting. Ben gave an oral presentation on a new statistical weather forecast technique he has developed in collaboration with the State Climatologist Office and the Central Pennsylvania Office of the National Weather Service. UG Meteorology undergraduate Jon Zawislak spent three weeks at sea as part of the NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory team aboard the Research Vessel Seward Johnson where he participated in the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean Experiment. During his time at sea, Jon supervised the rawinsonde launch teams, analyzed soundings, learned radar meteorology, and lent his meteorological expertise in everything ranging from day-to-day shipboard forecasting to cloud thermodynamics. Jon's participation in RICO was sponsored by Dr. Jeff Hare (PSU Meteo 1995) of NOAA ETL, whose research program in cloud physics and remote sensing his efforts supported.
