Students who enter graduate school need a strong background in mathematics, physics and computer science; courses in related disciplines such as chemistry, engineering, geography and geosciences are also helpful. As a fundamental aspect of thesis research is communicating results to others, additional speaking and writing courses are also recommended. As the focus of a student's graduate study and research will be in one of a wide variety of subdisciplines, elective courses should be selected carefully in consultation with the student's adviser.
