METEO 465/565
Middle Atmospheric Meteorology/Physics of the Upper Atmosphere
(3 credits)

Purpose and Content

The middle atmosphere comprises the ionosphere and stratosphere. In the stratosphere, the focus of this course, the well-known phenomenon of ozone depletion and interactions of chemistry with climate, are important, exciting phenomena. The processes and properties determining stratospheric dynamics, radiation, chemistry and interaction with the troposphere, will be covered. You will learn about the latest news on the “ozone hole” and new satellite instruments to follow global change. Lectures and discussion, with some discussion led by students, constitute the class format. There will be problem sets and at least two exams.
