A note about eligibility. Typically, Department of Meteorology
scholarships are awarded to students in their sophomore, junior, or senior
years to students who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. However, note that
in any given year the GPA requirement may be higher or lower depending
on available scholarship funding.

Establishing
the Levenia Adom Memorial Graduate Scholarship:
Significant donors are needed to quickly bring this memorial award to
the level of $20,000 so that it can start providing income for graduate
students with a passion for weather forecasting and communications. This
award was established in memory of graduate student, Levenia Adom, who
passed away from colon cancer just a few months from finishing her M.S.
degree. As you can see, we are on our way to reaching the $20,000 funding
level, but we need your help. For more information about this award, please

Addison L. Sears-Collins Book Supplement:
The funds for this award are provided by Addison
L. Sears-Collins, a 2006 M.S. graduate of the Department of Meteorology.
His annual gift is intended to provide financial assistance for the purchase
of textbooks to one student of ethnic/cultural and/or national background
who contributes to the diversity of the student body in the Department
of Meteorology. Preference will be given to an African American sophomore,
junior or senior student with financial need, and a cumulative GPA of
2.5 or higher.
AccuWeather
Scholarships: AccuWeather normally
awards two scholarships to undergraduates entering their senior year,
based upon achievement in weather forecasting. There are plaques in the
weather station bearing the recipients' names.
Alfred
K. Blackadar Graduate Fellowship in Meteorology:
Funds for this fellowship have been pledged by Alfred K. Blackadar to
recognize and provide financial assistance to outstanding meteorology
graduate students. Alfred Blackadar served as department head of the Department
of Meteorology from 1967-1981 and is now Professer Emeritus.
Charles
L. and Anna R. Hosler Scholarship in Meteorology: Funds
for these scholarships have been donated by Charles L. and Anna R. Hosler.
Charles Hosler was Department Head of Meteorology from 1961-1965, at which
time he took over as Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
In 1985, he was promoted to Senior Vice President for Research and Dean
of the Graduate School. The Hosler scholarships are awarded to full-time
undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Department
of Meteorology who have acheived superior academic records or who manifest
promise of outstanding academic success. Students who qualify for
the Schreyer Scholars will be eligible.
Chelius
Family Scholarship in Meteorology: Funds
for this scholarship have been donated from the estate of Helen Chelius
to recruit and/or retain the best and brightest full-time undergraduate
students to the Department of Meteorology. Dr.
Carl Chelius, Helen's son, began working in the department as a Senior
Research Pilot and subsequently served on the faculty until his retirement
in 1994.
Donald L. and Ellen Eberly Endowed Scholarship
in Meteorology: Funds for this scholarship
have been donated by Donald Eberly (class of 1956) and Ellen Eberly. This
scholarship is awarded to a Penn State undergraduate student majoring
in meteorology who has achieved a superior academic record or manifests
promise of outstanding academic success, has achieved a 3.0 GPA or better
in mathematics, has proven financial need, and is a U.S. citizen with
a good academic record.
James H. and Joan E. Meyer Trustee Scholarship in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences: Funds for these scholarships have been donated by alumnus James Meyer (B.S. '53, M.S. '55) and his wife Joan to support undergraduate students who are pursuing studies in the area of physical meteorology. Previously employed by MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, Technical Operations, Inc., Electromagnetic Research Corporation, and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in a variety of applied and physical meteorological research capacities, Mr. Meyer currently serves as President of Meteorological Applications, a consulting firm based in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Hans
A. Panofsky Scholarship/Award in Meteorology: Funds
for these scholarships have been donated by the friends, colleagues, and
students of Hans A. Panofsky, who was professor of meteorology at Penn
State from 1951 through 1982. He was an Evan Pugh Research Professor,
known for his work on atmospheric turbulence and diffusion. These scholarships
are awarded to Penn State undergraduate students majoring in meteorology
who have demonstrated superior academic ability and have a need for financial
assistance in order to obtain their University degree.
Joel
N. and Peggy Myers Scholarship in Meteorology: Funds
for these scholarships have been donated by Joel N. and Peggy Myers.
Dr. Joel Myers is President and Founder of AccuWeather, Inc. and received
his Ph.D. from the Department of Meteorology in 1971. These scholarships
are awarded to Penn State undergraduate students enrolled or planning
to enroll in the Department of Meteorology who have a particular
interest and aptitude in the area of weather forecasting, communication,
and/or practical applications.
Jon M. and Gwen K. Nese Meteorology Alumni Outreach Fund in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences: Funds for this endowment have been provided by Jon and Gwen Nese to support and promote activities of the Meteorology Alumni at Penn State (MAPS) society. Jon Nese received his B.S. ('83), M.S. ('85), and Ph.D.('89) degrees in Meteorology from Penn State and is a Senior Lecturer in the Department.
Minority
Graduate School Initiative Scholarship: An
alumnus of the Department of Meteorology, who wishes to remain anonymous,
has established this award to encourage minorities majoring in meteorology
to seek graduate education.
Kruhoeffer
Annual Scholarships in Meteorology: Funds
for this scholarship have been donated by Douglas P. Kruhoeffer (class
of 1980). This scholarship is awarded annually to three undergraduate
students majoring in meteorology who have demonstrated financial need
and two undergraduate students majoring in meteorology who have achieved
superior academic records or manifest promise of outstanding academic
success. Each scholarship is awarded for one academic year and shall
be renewed for subsequent years providing the recipient continues to meet
the conditions of eligibility and funds are available.
Kruhoeffer
Endowed Scholarship in Meteorology: Funds
for this scholarship have been pledged by Douglas P. Kruhoeffer (class
of 1980) to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding
junior and senior students in meteorology who have achieved superior academic
records or who manifest promise of academic success.
Terry
C. and Carmen H. Tarbell Meteorology Endowment in the College of Earth
and Mineral Sciences: Funds
for this endowment have been pledged by Terry (M.S. 1972, Ph.D. 1979)
and Carmen Tarbell to enrich the Department of Meteorology by providing
monies to support the department.
Ralph E. Frank Endowment in the Department of Meteorology: Funds for this endowment have been donated by William Frank to promote interaction between faculty and students in the Department of Meteorology by providing monies for seminars, coffee hours, and social events. William Frank is a Professor in the Department of Meteorology at Penn State.
Undergraduate Research and Travel Fund in Meteorology: This endowment has been established by an anonymous donor for providing materials and other expenses relative to student research, or for travel and lodging expenses for temporary student assignments and attendance at professional conferences. The funds are intended for undergraduate students pursuing careers in operational meteorology.
W.
John and Gail M. Hussey Commemorative Lectureship in Meteorology:
Funds for this endowment have been provided
by John and Gail Hussey to support lectures by outstanding scholars in
meteorology with an emphasis on selecting experts in the field of Earth
Remote Sensing. John received his M.S. degree ('68) in Meteorology
from Penn State and is now an executive with the The Aerospace Corporation.
Warren
M. and Mary C. Washington Scholarship in Meteorology:
Funds for this endowment have been provided by Warren (Ph.D. in 1964)
and Mary Washington to recognize and support outstanding undergraduate
and graduate students in meteorology with an emphasis on students whose
ethnic, cultural, or national background contribute to the diversity of
the student body.
William
and Mary Jane Brune Endowment in Meteorology: Funds
for this endowment have been provided by William and Mary Jane Brune to
support department-wide projects that will improve the overall atmosphere
affecting work and study in the Department of Meterology. William
Brune is Professor and Head of the Department of Meteorology at Penn State.

General Information Scholarships are awarded competitively among students who achieve academic merit and/or have financial need. Based on available funds, scholarships may be awarded to incoming freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior students with a GPA above 3.0, except in cases of documented financial need. Scholarships are not normally awarded if GPA is below 2.75. ................................................................................................................................................................. Students must submit an application each year by 15 April.
