METEO 515 Practical Statistics for Atmospheric Sciences (Fall 2018)

Course Description: The aim of this course is to build practical statistical tools for data analysis in the atmospheric sciences. The course will first provide the students with a solid foundation in fundamental statistical concepts, including hypothesis testing, maximum likelihood estimation, random variables, and probability density functions. Once the students are familiar with the basic terminology and concepts in statistics, the course will move on to a suite of more advanced statistical techniques that are commonly used in atmospheric science research. The advanced topics include regression analysis, nonparametric tests and resampling techniques, data reduction such as eigendecompositions and principal component analysis, time series analysis, spatial statistics, and Bayesian modeling. The emphasis will be on the sound application of these techniques and their interpretations, rather than technical foundations and derivations. The goal is to build intuition behind commonly used statistical tools and learn how to avoid potential pitfalls in their applications. 

Prerequisites and Concurrent Courses: There are no prerequisites for this course.  However, this course assumes familiarity with calculus and linear algebra, including basic matrix manipulations and eigendecompositon.

Assessment Policy:

Assignments:

Assignment will occur roughly weekly during the first half of the semester and bi-weekly in the second half of the semester.  These will be based directly on materials from the lectures and any required reading.  When programming is required, students are free to program in the language of their choice; however, sample code and resources will typically be provided in Matlab.  The number of assignments is subject to change based on course progression.  Due dates for each assignment will be communicated upon their distribution. 

Mid-Term:

There will be one midterm that will cover the material on the first half of the course.  The objective of the midterm is to ensure that students have mastered the materials presented in the lectures. 

Final Project:

This project will focus on topics covered in the second half of the class but concepts from the first half of the class will remain of importance.  There will also be a final presentation worth 20% and a paper worth 20% of the final grade.  

Grading Policy:

The following weights are used to determine the final course grade:

  • Assignments: 30 %
  • Midterm: 30 %
  • Final Project: 40 %

A: Above 90 %, A-: 85-89, B+: 80-84 %, B: 75-79 %, B-: 70-74 %, C+: 65-69 %, C: 60-64 %, D: 55-59 %, F: Less than 55 %

Academic Integrity  

Students in this class are expected to write up their problem sets individually, to work the exams on their own, and to write their papers in their own words using proper citations.  Class members may work on the problem sets in groups, but then each student must write up the answers separately.  Students are not to copy problem or exam answers from another person's paper and present them as their own; students may not plagiarize text from papers or websites written by others.  Students who present other people's work as their own will receive at least a 0 on the assignment and may well receive an F or XF in the course.  Please see: Earth and Mineral Sciences Academic Integrity Policy: http://www.ems.psu.edu/undergraduate/academic-advising/forms-and-procedures/academic-integrity, which this course adopts. Recommended Policies 

Syllabus and Paper Acknowledgement Forms It is the recommendation of the college that all students sign and return the Syllabus Acknowledgement Form (http://facdev.e-education.psu.edu/sites/default/files/files/Syllabus acknowledgement form.doc) during the first week of the semester. In addition, The College also recommends the Paper Submission Form (http://facdev.e-education.psu.edu/sites/default/files/files/Paper submission form.docx) as a way to have students take responsibility for papers/labs/homework done as part of group work.

Deferred Grades

If you are prevented from completing this course within the prescribed amount of time for reasons that are beyond your control, it is possible to have the grade deferred with the concurrence of the instructor, following Penn State Deferred Grade Policy 48-40 (http://senate.psu.edu/policies-and-rules-for-undergraduate-students/47-00-48-00-and-49-00-grades/#48-40). To seek a deferred grade, you must submit a written request (by e-mail or U.S. post) to the instructor describing the reason(s) for the request. Non-emergency permission for filing a deferred grade must be requested before the beginning of the final examination period. It is up to the instructor to determine whether or not you will be permitted to receive a deferred grade. If permission is granted, you will work with the instructor to establish a communication plan and a clear schedule for completion.  If, for any reason, the course work for the deferred grade is not complete by the assigned time, a grade of "F" will be automatically entered on your transcript.

Military Personnel
