A vigorous African Easterly Wave moved across West Africa during the last week of August 2015. The wave emerged off the coast of West Africa over anomalously warm eastern Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs) on August 29th. By 0600 UTCAugust 30th the disturbance was named Tropical Storm Fred and later Hurricane Fred on the morning of August 31st as it moved through the Cape Verde Islands. In this presentation, I discuss the challenges from the ground, along with forecast, observations and damage from Hurricane Fred. I also discuss the lessons learned and the infrastructure and practices that should be adopted to protect the coastal West Africa and Cape Verde from future hurricanes.
