Abstract:
For a long time it was accepted that decadal predictability in the ocean arose from the slow time scales associated with oceanic circulations, particularly the Meridional Overtuning Circulation. However, this explanation has been challenged recently. In this talk, I will review this history and discuss mechanisms for decadal predictability that do not involve active ocean dynamics.
