The Giant Leap Internship program aims at providing students with valuable and meaningful working experience and acquaints them with an internationally operating company. During their time at Vaisala, students will be assigned a challenging project that they will present to the head of the business area or unit at the end of the internship. The assignments do not necessarily have to be separate projects - the students can be integrated into an existing development project or other challenging process. Assignments can be completed either individually, in pairs, together with an experienced Vaisala employee or as part of a group. What is important is that the students are well integrated and feel part of the Vaisala team.

PROJECT:  METEOROLOGICAL  ANALYSIS OF HIGH IMPACT SHORT TERM WIND ENERGY FORECASTS

RESPONSIBILITIES (What the position entails)

The selected individual will be responsible for performing meteorological analysis of high impact weather events associated with short term wind energy forecasts.  The individual will be expected to process both proprietary and publicly available datasets for this analysis. He/she will be working in an office environment interacting with a team of scientists and subject matter experts.

REQUIRED SKILLS OF THE INTERN: 

  • Experience processing, visualizing and analyzing boundary layer weather data.
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for meteorology
  • General programming skills and applicable proficiency in at least one programming language for data manipulation
  • An understanding of the effects of complex orography and/or the wind energy industry is a plus.

PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND OF THE INTERN: 

Minimum of three years of undergraduate meteorology coursework by the start of the internship

FINAL DELIVERABLE: Presentation to the project team and management.
