Job Overview: The Chief Meteorologist will lead our weather team, making department decisions and anchor our evening newscasts at 5, 6, 6:30, and 10 and produce a dynamic weather product in tune with the station’s strategic goals. The Chief Meteorologist is a proven storyteller and communicator on television and across KAAL’s digital and social platforms and in the community. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the content of KAAL on-air weather and online weather broadcasts and content.
  • Communicates warnings and alerts, produces graphics and maps, and reports live during severe weather events. Effectively utilize social media, during severe weather and everyday situations, as well as write weather stories.
  • Forecasting, producing, and presenting clear and concise weather casts which tell a story and connect with viewers. Develop content and graphics for on-air, web, and social media.
  • Act as a leader of our weather department and provide guidance to fellow meteorologists.
  • Work with producers and fellow meteorologists to determine relevant weather content in breaking news and everyday situations, doing live shots and reporting from community events and in breaking news.
  • Enterprise stories in line with our brand on a daily basis.
  • Represent the station at personal appearances and community events.
  • Organize, perform, and engage with students in our compelling Weather Lab school program.
  • Maintain appropriate and strict standards regarding wardrobe, hair, cosmetics, and grooming as directed by management. This position will use cameras, research sources, and editing equipment.

 Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience. Experience in broadcast meteorology required.
  • Chief meteorologist experience preferred. Experience with computer graphics and radar.
  • Fluency in The Weather Company’s Max Weather System is a plus. Excellent weather and news judgment.
  • Abilities in critical thinking, quick and effective decision-making, and live ad-libbing. Ability to work well under pressure while meeting daily assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to write, shoot and edit in a non-linear format.
  • An AMS seal or the CBM from the American Meteorological Society is preferred. Professional, consistent on-air appearance.
  • Must be flexible to fill in on other shifts, including nights, weekends, early mornings, and holidays as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving history as determined by the Company. Driving record will be checked.
  • Physical Requirements: Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer and other equipment. Communicate in English both verbally and in writing. Read, hear, and speak clearly. Good vision to view video. Prepare and present information including business correspondence and proposals. Think critically, analytically, and tactically and articulate information that may be complex in clear, concise manner to
  • others. Quick and clear thinking is required. Must be able to move quickly at times to respond to tight deadlines. Stress can be high. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
